The Geological Storage Potential of Carbon Dioxide in Trinidad
by Ms. Karishma MaharajThe effects of global warming and climate change are increasingly evident in Trinidad and Tobago as sea levels continue to rise and weather patterns become unpredictable. One of the main contributors is greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, specifically carbon dioxide. Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) projects have been identified as one mitigative solution in the industrial sector that can not only reduce the carbon footprint but also maximise hydrocarbon production if coupled with enhanced oil recovery operations.
With safe carbon dioxide storage sites being depleted, oil/gas reservoirs and saline aquifers, there is potential for CCS operations in Trinidad. Therefore, the focus of this research is on the geological aspect of this process by investigating the key elements that determine a site’s suitability to store carbon dioxide.

Ms. Karishma Maharaj holds a Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.Sc.) in Petroleum Engineering from The University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT).
Having an interest in energy sustainability, Ms. Maharaj is currently pursuing a Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) in Energy Studies. She is also currently employed as a Research Assistant at UTT, contributing to the development of the National Carbon Dioxide Storage Atlas. This position fosters her early career development as she continues to enhance her knowledge about Carbon Capture and Storage projects and gain technical skills.
Having a passion for learning, she also aspires to pursue a Doctoral Degree.
