Creating Guidelines to Use Calypso as a Pedagogical Tool in the Schools

by Mrs. Khadeece Celestin-Joseph

This research intends to demonstrate how calypso can be applied while enhancing student learning.  Education in Trinidad and Tobago served the elite and ignored the needs of poor and marginalised people. Calypso has always been a tool for self-expression. Calypso can also be used as literary art, musical literacy, literacy device and numeracy device.  If we incorporate calypso in the teaching of subjects at the primary school, education can be made more relatable, relevant, cultural and interesting.  Performance in school should be more holistic and provide platforms for the struggling learners, creative learners and by extension multiple intelligences to learn while using their talents.

It is of great importance to allow students to express themselves while using their talents, other significant resources, and life experiences. One can imagine how wonderful a student feels when their teacher makes an extra effort to empathise and encourage them to share their talents. According to John Potter (2006 p 56), ‘the students go through the process as active learners, assimilating what they learn about Carnival activities and concepts such as calypso, masquerade and so on by immediately engaging with the processes involved.’  This research seeks  to benefit our nations’ children. With the publication of the findings, teachers will be provided with a detailed guide to advance their teaching techniques through the application of calypso to the primary school’s curriculum. This research is much anticipated.
