Reservoir characterisation of mature fields is essential for optimising production, identifying bypassed hydrocarbons, and evaluating enhanced oil recovery (EOR) potential. Additionally, it supports further initiatives, ensuring sustainable field redevelopment and long-term resource optimisation.
The Penal/Barrackpore Fields, located in the Southern Basin of Trinidad, have been on production since 1936. One of the challenges is the absence of data. The fields are structurally complex, mature hydrocarbon-bearing fields. This study investigates the suitability of the fields in the Angostura Development which began producing in 2005 with valuable data, as an analogue for the Penal/Barrackpore Fields by analysing their shared geological history and depositional environments.
Both fields were influenced by compressional tectonics, resulting in structurally trapped hydrocarbons within thrust-faulted formations. Additionally, their depositional settings within Cipero Formation members have produced comparable reservoir characteristics making the Angostura Development a useful model for evaluating recovery strategies in Penal/Barrackpore.
By integrating available data, this study examines how the geological evolution of the Angostura Development can provide insights into the Penal/Barrackpore Fields. Establishing this analogue relationship will help refine reservoir characterisation and inform hydrocarbon recovery strategies, contributing to improved field development in the Penal/Barrackpore mature hydrocarbon area.
