Incorporating Environmental Management Control Systems into Manufacturing Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica: A Strategy to Promote a Circular Economy

Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) serve as the backbone of economic development in Caribbean countries like Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica, yet they are also significant contributors to environmental degradation.

This study looks into the pressing need for implementing Environmental Management Control Systems (EMCS) within manufacturing Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) in these nations. EMCS, encompassing sustainability-oriented innovations (SOIs) such as Environmental Management Systems, Eco-control and Environmental Management Accounting amongst others, aim to align business operations with environmental sustainability, thereby benefiting both the economy and ecology.

The study fills a notable gap in existing literature by exploring factors at both the micro and macro levels that influence the adoption of EMCS in Caribbean MSMEs. As the global discourse pushes towards sustainability, the traditional linear "take-make-dispose" model prevalent in developing economies, is put to scrutiny. For the Caribbean, replete with challenges like water scarcity, coral reef decay, and high unemployment, shifting to a circular and green economic model is not just beneficial, but essential.

The research employs a descriptive survey design, incorporating Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to assess spatial variables affecting EMCS adoption and use of multivariate regression analysis. The research focuses on Manufacturing MSMEs in Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica. The objective of the study is to identify influencing factors and stakeholder interactions in assessing the use of GIS in environmental planning.

Among the potential benefits are production cost reduction, new collaboration opportunities, market expansion, green job creation, and enhanced environmental performance. This aligns well with international sustainable development goals and opens avenues for sustainable financing and investment.

This study aims to serve as a blueprint for stakeholders including government agencies, and manufacturing associations in Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica, advocating for a concerted effort to integrate environmental considerations into the corporate strategy of Caribbean MSMEs.

Mr. EROMONSELE AKHIDENOR is a seasoned GIS Coordinator with over fifteen (15) years of experience in research and development. Mr. Akhidenor works at the National Environment and Planning Agency in Kingston, Jamaica where he focuses on spatial data conversion, managing GIS databases, and web services. He serves as a crucial link between information technology and environmental planning. His managerial skills encompass strategic planning, budget oversight, and fostering effective team dynamics.

Prior to his current role, he served as a Research Officer, focusing on environmental research, modelling, and impact assessments. He was also a Research Consultant at the Jamaica Conservation and Development Trust, an NGO in Jamaica, focusing on hazard mapping and disaster risk assessments.

Presently, he is a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) candidate of Environmental Studies at The University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT). He holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Resource Efficiency from Dresden University of Technology in Saxony, Germany, and a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Natural Resource Management from the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus.

With skills ranging from critical thinking and research methods, Eromonsele is an active member of international working groups, including UNEP's Scientific and Technical group on the Cartagena Convention and ISO/TC 211 - Geographic information/Geomatics Standards.
