The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees are awarded on completion of a thesis or dissertation, based on innovative work, in which advanced research techniques are successfully applied to a research problem. A minimum of three to a maximum of six courses are required to complement the research. There must be an oral defence of the thesis for the MPhil programme and dissertation for the PhD programme.

There is also the option whereby students enrolled in the MPhil programme may upgrade their enrolment to PhD level, provided their work meets the required standards. Details for such an upgrade are provided in the Examination Procedures for MPhil Theses and PhD Dissertations document.
