Thato M. Mokobi, who hails from Botswana, believes that the relentless pursuit of one’s dreams can open up a world of exciting possibilities and experiences, all of which can positively shape one’s life. It is with this in mind, Thato decided to pursue the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Food Science and Technology at The University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT).

Miles away from his homeland, Thato is not regretful of this decision, as he is of the opinion that UTT’s programme is practical, relevant and impactful. He further states that the courses, although challenging, are highly informative and allow for the development of a practical skill-set. Thato shares unreservedly, “UTT offers me the tools I need to pursue my dreams. My eventual goal is to use my education to highlight to my country the importance of locally-grown foods and in so doing, seek to empower them of the many opportunities available.” With a clear focus, Thato understands the need to contribute to the transformation of the agricultural sector in an attempt to ensure sustainability and a better world for all.

Aside from his academic pursuits, Thato has expressed an appreciation of Trinidad and Tobago’s rich and diverse culture, as he is still learning the local dialect and adjusting to the interesting aspects of “Trini” life. He acknowledges the kindness and patience of not only his classmates, but also the helpful Administrative Staff at UTT, who have made the transition process a smooth one. In turn, he is always ready to share information about Botswana, and the similarities between the two countries and intends to return to his home with a taste of Trinbagonian culture.

Having previously studied in the extremely cold climate of Russia before attending UTT, Thato is no stranger to transitions and adjustment. Daily, he reminds himself of his value and worth as he is keenly aware of the struggles that come with adapting to change and claiming one’s place in the world. By his actions and positive attitude, he hopes to help others fully appreciate themselves.

For Thato, having few expectations about his experience at UTT has allowed him to keep an open mind and appreciate the beauty of the journey, filled with its own challenges and many lessons. As he continues onward in his journey, with a level of confidence and excitement, Thato is ready to embrace all that The University of Trinidad and Tobago has to offer.
