Alain Johnson, a graduate of UTT’s Bachelor of Applied Science in Coastal and Ocean Studies, has transformed his lifelong love for the ocean into a meaningful career in environmental conservation. He is currently employed as an Environmental Officer at the National Parks Authority, Nelson’s Dockyard National Park, Antigua and Barbuda.

Alain’s connection to the marine environment began during childhood. His father ensured that he and his siblings learned to swim and developed an appreciation for the sea, with family visits to the beach becoming an almost weekly tradition. These cherished experiences inspired Alain to pursue a career dedicated to the conservation and sustainable management of marine and coastal ecosystems.

During his time at UTT, Alain gained broad exposure to marine and environmental science. One of the most valuable skills he developed was adaptability. Working across different subject areas taught him how to approach unfamiliar topics, learn new techniques and apply his knowledge to diverse projects. This adaptability has enabled him to work confidently with multidisciplinary teams and respond effectively to new environmental challenges.

One of the most memorable aspects of Alain’s academic journey was completing his final-year thesis on gene flow and connectivity in elkhorn coral. From navigating COVID-19 restrictions and conducting intensive laboratory work, to finally seeing the results of many hours of effort, the experience strengthened his resilience and deepened his appreciation for scientific research.

Alain credits the programme’s combination of scientific knowledge, practical training and diverse experiences with helping him become a well-rounded environmental professional. His advice to prospective students who share his passion for marine environments is enthusiastic and straightforward:

“Do it! If you love the ocean and marine spaces, this degree is for you. You will get your hands dirty, learn a great deal and build a professional network that can remain with you throughout your career.”

Alain’s journey demonstrates how an early love for the sea, supported by education and practical experience, can develop into a rewarding career protecting valuable natural and cultural resources.
