Diploma in Coastal and Ocean Sciences (2023-2025)

When I enrolled in the Diploma in Coastal and Ocean Sciences at The University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT), I knew I had a strong interest in the marine environment. What I did not realise was how profoundly the programme would shape my perspective, strengthen my skills, and influence my future aspirations.

One of the most rewarding aspects of the programme was the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with lecturers and mentors who were genuinely invested in my success. Through the guidance of a supportive professor, I became involved in a coral reef mapping research project with an external organisation. This experience allowed me to apply classroom knowledge in a real-world setting and deepened my passion for marine conservation and environmental research.

As my confidence grew, so did the opportunities available to me. I later served as a student lead researcher on marine-related projects, assisted students and faculty with final-year research activities, and contributed to marine-focused initiatives and organisations. These experiences strengthened my leadership abilities, expanded my practical knowledge, and provided invaluable insight into the many ways marine science can create positive environmental change.

Throughout the programme, I was exposed to a diverse range of subjects, including oceanography, coastal processes, marine biodiversity, marine-based industries, resource management and conservation, and maritime law. Each course challenged me to think critically, develop independence, and gain a deeper appreciation for sustainable ocean stewardship and the interconnectedness of marine and coastal systems.

Like many first-year students, my transition into university life was not without challenges. I had to develop discipline, effective time-management skills, and the confidence to navigate new academic expectations. Learning how to collaborate with others, adapt to unfamiliar situations, and seek support when needed, strengthened my resilience, patience, and sense of personal responsibility. Throughout this journey, the encouragement of my parents, lecturers, and classmates played an invaluable role in helping me grow.

Completing this diploma represents far more than earning an academic qualification. It reflects years of perseverance, personal growth, continuous learning, and a willingness to embrace opportunities that pushed me beyond my comfort zone. Looking back, I am proud not only of what I achieved academically, but also of the person I have become throughout the process.

I am grateful to UTT for providing an environment that nurtured both my academic and personal development. As I continue working toward my goal of becoming a Marine Scientist, I carry forward the lessons, experiences, and confidence gained through this remarkable journey.
