Tobago native Kirth Muir, final year student of the Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.Sc.) in Utilities Engineering (Mechanical Option) at The University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT), sees UTT's integration of qualified faculty, service-learning and a holistic approach to the teaching and learning process as the right combination for his success.

Kirth worked as an Operations Agent with Servisair (now Swissport) for almost nine (9) years and made the decision to further his studies in Mechanical Engineering, at UTT. He commented, "My decision to pursue tertiary education was heavily influenced by the passion I had gained during my years of working at the airport. After exploring the options available, UTT was the best choice for me." 

Kirth entered UTT in 2014, completing his National Engineering Technician Diploma (NETD) in Mechanical Engineering in 2016 at the top of his class. This provided the motivation for him to pursue his Bachelor's degree, which he notes, has broadened his knowledge of Mechanical Engineering and equipped him with the necessary technical skills for the world of work. "At UTT, I have designed and built a rehabilitative wheelchair attachment, and currently my group and I are working on building an automated garlic shelling machine for our final year project. I would definitely recommend UTT's Utilities Engineering Programmes as it encourages you to think 'out of the box' when seeking solutions to unique problems in the industry." 

Kirth admits that there were challenges throughout his academic journey, the biggest of which included having to relocate from Tobago to Trinidad and also making the decision to pursue his studies full-time. However, he was able to overcome these challenges with the continued assistance and support from family and friends. He explicitly states, "I am a firm believer in working hard for what you want and being able to achieve anything once you have the proper mindset and the determination."

As he nears the completion of his programme, Kirth is excited about his future, as his goal is to become a Chartered Engineer and eventually a Lecturer in the field of Mechanical Engineering. "I am extremely passionate about sharing the knowledge that I have gained with others and giving back to my country for its further development."
