SHAMEAL ALI, UTT B.A.Sc. Process Engineering Alumnus
IN A WORLD that is witnessing the effects of the consistent use of non-renewable energy, Mr. Shameal Ali, is a strong advocate for the promotion of renewable energy and energy efficiency. In 2014, as Valedictorian, Shameal graduated with a Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.Sc.) in Process Engineering. This followed his completion of the Diploma in Chemical Engineering Technology in 2007, at UTT Point Lisas Campus.
At UTT, Shameal was a member of UTT's "Team Greenergy", which was victorious at the 2014 Trinidad and Tobago leg of BP's Ultimate Field Trip Global Challenge on Efficiency in the Energy Sector. As winners, the UTT team joined winning teams from four (4) other countries on a visit to BP's upstream and downstream operations in Alaska and Chicago, Illinois, respectively. In reflecting on his experiences, Shameal emphasised the role of UTT's faculty, as well as the structure of the Process Engineering programme, in preparing him for the dynamic world of work. He indicated that the application of critical problem solving skills, combined with the practical and theoretical knowledge obtained while studying at UTT, gave him an advantage in industry and enabled him to "hit the ground running".
Since 2011, Shameal has been employed as an Industrial Chemist, and from time to time, serves as a Project Engineer on specific Plant Reliability Projects within the power sector. Collectively, Shameal has over twelve (12) years of experience in the oil and gas, petrochemical and utility industries. During this time, he has held operational, technical, analytical and leadership roles in several companies.
In 2017, Shameal participated in a multi-lateral seminar on Smart Grid Planning and Construction in Developing Countries, which was hosted in China. As the only Trinidad and Tobago national among representatives from 35 countries, Shameal was exposed to both the business and technical aspects of the global renewable energy industry and the possible implementation and adaptation within the local energy landscape.
This seminar confirmed Shameal's position on the urgent need to adopt energy efficient measures at both the national and individual levels.
Shameal acknowledges that while steps are being taken to implement renewable energy policies and measures, there is still room for growth as Trinidad and Tobago continues to strive to become "a beacon of energy in the Caribbean". He is fully prepared to use his wealth of knowledge and extensive experience to contribute meaningfully to the country's sustainable development in the energy sector.
The University of Trinidad and Tobago applauds Shameal on his many achievements and commends his efforts towards sustainable development, as he continues to keep the UTT flag soaring high.
