Kiron Simmons is Owner and Head Coach at Just Fitness, and recent graduate of The University of Trinidad and Tobago’s (UTT) Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) with specialisation in Sport & Exercise Science, Pre-Medicine, Pre-Health Professions. From academic, to professional, here is his story:

Please give a brief history of your academic and professional background.

I graduated from St. Benedict’s College in 2004 and began building a career in the Auto Mechanic field when I was involved in an accident that prevented me from continuing. During my rehabilitation I developed a desire to assist persons in achieving a better quality of life through physical activity, which led me to getting certified in Personal Training by the Athletics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA).

In 2012, I started offering services as a Trainer and have been building my business ever since. Two years later I was hired as part of the High Performance Unit at UTT and worked alongside Athletic Trainers, Physiotherapists, Strength & Conditioning Coaches and Technical Coaches with scholarship athletes, students and staff. My experience in this setting motivated me to enrol in the University’s Kinesiology programme, to further my understanding in the field to be a better asset to both Just Fitness and UTT.

Since graduating I have worked with the National Volleyball teams (U17 & U19 Boys; U23 & Snr. Women), St. Benedict’s College Dragon Boat Team, athletes of varying disciplines, and individuals seeking a better quality of life through physical training.

What influenced your decision to pursue this programme at UTT?

I pursued this programme because of the wide array of benefits to be gained working alongside supportive professionals, and wanting to be a greater asset to my community and company.

How has being a graduate of UTT assisted your overall professional experience and development?

Beyond the knowledge gained, the relationships built while in the programme have provided me with the opportunity to give back to my community by training enrolled students and providing them with professional field hours via service learning.

What words of advice do you have for those wishing to pursue this line of study at UTT?

Studying at the Centre for Kinesiology, Physical Education and Sport will expose you to some of the country’s most qualified professionals in their field who present themselves as approachable and genuinely interested in your overall success. Once you apply yourself you will definitely exceed your expectations.
