For Kyle Hannays, the timeless adage, "you are never too old to learn" is the driving force behind his continued success. Entering The University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) as a mature student, Kyle graduated in 2016, after successfully completing the Bachelor of Education with a specialisation in Physical Education.
As he relayed his decision to pursue tertiary education at UTT as a mature student, Kyle shared, "In being assigned to the Training Department of the Trinidad and Tobago Fire Service (TTFS), I was responsible for the academic and physical aspects of training. I am also a certified and accredited national tennis coach and for me, the Education Programme at UTT provided a firm foundation, which ensured that I was well equipped to impart information to the trainees and also enhance my knowledge of the discipline of sport. Naturally, this was the perfect combination for me."
Kyle admits, the experience of being a mature student, brought with it many challenges, such as having to balance a career, studies, professional coaching duties and most importantly his family. He notes, "In this regard, my interests and approach to the entire experience differed somewhat from those of my younger counterparts." Despite the trials, he quickly acknowledges that UTT’s accommodating academic and support staff made his educational journey a fulfilling one.
With his sight set on pursuing a doctorate in the area of Sport Pedagogy in the near future, it is his desire to see Trinidad and Tobago become the premier location for coaching education in the region. He is currently preparing to present at the International Tennis Federation’s Worldwide Coaches Conference in Bangkok, Thailand in October, another addition to his already impressive resume.
Kyle is deeply grateful for the many persons who have inspired and assisted him along his journey.
Kyle is committed to advancing his knowledge and skillset and is keen to sharing this with others. He believes that learning is a lifelong process, which can begin at any age, and does not only entail academic qualifications but more so the unique ability to better someone’s life by sharing your knowledge and experiences.
