UTT Outreach and the Eastern Regional Health Authority partner to promote effective Risk Management and Root Cause Analysis in Healthcare.

The University of Trinidad and Tobago’s (UTT) Outreach and Industry Relations Unit recognises the importance of the Eastern Regional Health Authority (ERHA) in providing a cost-effective, quality health care service to its target population. To this end UTT partnered with ERHA to provide specially tailored Risk Management and Root Cause Analysis Training.

This twenty-four (24) hour course entitled 'Risk Management and Root Cause Analysis in Healthcare', addressed risk management skills and competencies including:  development of a risk management system with risk identification, risk analysis, assessment of risk severity, and frequency and strengthening the quality management system through the minimisation of risks. It increased awareness of risks, accountability and liability and propagated safer work practices and systems using tools for root cause analysis, and process mapping to allow investigation of adverse events and near misses within the healthcare system.

Training was delivered  using the online Zoom platform. Ten (10) administrative level employees subscribed to the training, including persons in the position of Quality Coordinator, Customer Relations Officer and Quality Auditor. This partnership bodes well for practioners within the ERHA, which is responsible for providing health care for the catchment population of approximately 120,000 persons, from Matelot in the North to Guayaguayare, Rio Claro and Brothers Road in the South,  to Valencia in the East.
