It is intended that, beyond your University degree, your future goals will encompass rewarding and satisfying jobs and/or furthering of your studies. This focus can be seen in UTT's use of the Co-op approach in the delivery of its programmes. The Co-op approach is a structured educational strategy that combines institutional learning with relevant practical experience in the workplace through cooperative job placements, which allows you to make a smooth transition into the world of work.

In today's competitive workplace, academic achievement is not enough. Employers place high emphasis on practical experience, and for many this can be the deciding factor in choosing to accept or reject an application.  Furthermore, the student is given the opportunity to sample varying career options in order to get a feel of what is the best fit for him/her. UTT's Career Development Unit has placed more than 80% of students in training positions.

As an entrepreneurial university, where academia and research are linked to national problems, this emphasis on relevance continues to set UTT apart as a unique and important institution for national growth and development.

UTT's Cooperative Education approach allows for the following:

  • A pool of competent qualified graduates who can easily transition into industry
  • Improved recruitment success for companies. Employers have the unique opportunity to evaluate potential recruits over several training periods before making recruitment decisions
  • Reduced turnover as familiarity with the organisation and its culture will lead to better awareness of the company and its operations
  • Increased job expectation of students as exposure to a real work environment brings with it more confidence and preparedness for the student. This fosters greater productivity for co-op participants
  • Lower labour costs borne by organisation. By utilising students in appropriate positions the organisation is provided with young innovative minds for a fraction of the usual operating cost
