On Saturday May 20th, 2023, The University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) embarked on a hike to Mermaid Pools, located in the Matura Forest in north east Trinidad. Both students and staff were invited to attend. This hike was hosted by the SUCCESS Unit of the University, the department directly responsible for inter- and intra- campus sporting, recreational and extracurricular activities, for staff and students alike.

With the absence of events during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, thus limiting social interaction among students and staff, there was a yearning for the resumption of such activities by the University. As such, the SUCCESS Unit was able to realise its maximum target of seventy participants, on this hike.

The tour guides, hailing from the Sangre Grande Conservation Awareness Group, were extremely professional and knowledgeable, providing valuable information on the flora, fauna and ecosystem of this geographical region. This information was well received by all in attendance as it allowed for a greater appreciation of the natural environment through which they were traversing. Indeed, a day of fun was had by all.

Look forward to the creation of a UTT Hiking Club, which, in collaboration with the SUCCESS Unit, will coordinate similar events, and outdoor activities.

Staff and students are advised to look out for flyers and to book their spots early, as interest is extremely high for upcoming events.
