LISA VARUNA RAMSUMAIR-JOSEPH is a unique alumna, having completed the relevant programme at each undergraduate level - Certificate in Criminology and Public Safety, Diploma in Criminology and Public Safety and Bachelor of Applied Science in Criminology and Public Safety - within The University of Trinidad and Tobago’s (UTT) Institute of Criminology and Public Safety (ICPS). She is now a Crime Scene Investigator with the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service, and shares this story with us:

Give us a brief history of your academic and professional background.

I attended St. Joseph’s Convent, St. Joseph, then gained employment in the private sector until 2002, when I transitioned to the public sector, joining the Ministry of National Security in an administrative capacity. Ten years later, I enlisted as a Police Officer.

What influenced your decision to pursue this programme at UTT?

Firstly, I was influenced by my career as a Police Officer as it was my desire to acquire knowledge to couple with my experience which would allow me to develop holistically. I thought this approach would give me the required edge necessary for promotion, contributing not only to the quality of my life, but also benefitting my employer.

I was also motivated to be in a well-informed position so as to advise my two children or anyone else requiring guidance in relation to my programme area. As a result, I can proudly say that my daughter is currently studying the same programme at UTT.

How has being a graduate of UTT assisted your overall professional experience and development?

Overall, my transformation was seamless. I have been taught to acknowledge, appreciate, respect, and understand everyone’s perspective. I learnt to listen attentively. I am no longer a timid person as throughout the duration of these programmes my self-confidence emerged, and grew. I can proudly say that I can stand on any forum and speak publicly without reservation. Discipline was learnt, both in my personal life and professional life and I continue to be recognised for this level of discipline at work. 

Special mention must be made on my ability to critically analyse any situation, leading to better decision-making. Group projects at UTT exposed me to learning human behaviour and I grew in my capacity of being able to identify people’s strengths and weaknesses, thereby allowing them to utilise their strengths and improve on their weaknesses. I apply the same concept in my current professional setting, which brings us together as a team. The crucial and imperative skill of time management was honed as a student at UTT, and this would not have been acquired otherwise. 

Overall, my time at UTT helped develop my managerial skills and this was quite evident, when in a conversation with my superior, I was informed that she would recommend me as a supervisor. She also complimented me on my time management skill and I responded that I owe it to UTT. 

What words of advice do you have for those wishing to pursue this line of study at UTT? 

Go for it, you won’t regret it! The University keeps its word by providing quality and incomparable education so as to maintain a well–informed and well-educated society, and everyone is afforded an equal opportunity to compete, not just nationally, but regionally and internationally. UTT has an informative support system, use it to access unexplored areas.

One of the main objectives at UTT is to produce well-rounded, successful graduates; everyday people who,  after being exposed to what the University has to offer, transform into someone new. When the tough gets going, remember why you chose this programme, what it is doing for you now, where it could take you, and how you can benefit from it, while allowing others to benefit from you. Do not limit yourself, your opportunities are limitless.
