THE UNIVERSITY OF TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO HUMAN RESOURCE AND ADMINISTRATION DEPARTMENT - NURSING UNIT WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY 2024: ENHANCING MENTAL HEALTH
DATE: OCTOBER 10, 2024
THEME: PRIORITISING MENTAL HEALTH IN THE WORKPLACE

As we observe World Mental Health Day 2024, the theme Prioritising Mental Health in the Workplace resonates deeply with employees and students in academic environments. The university environment, with its unique challenges and demands, can impact mental health significantly. As such, it is essential for universities to cultivate a supportive, inclusive and healthy work environment that values and promotes mental health for everyone. This publication by the Nurses of the Human Resource and Administration Department, is intended to convey to employees and students of The University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT), useful strategies to enhance mental well-being, both personally and professionally, in this academic environment.

Strategies for University Employees

  1. Prioritise Self-Care:
    • Schedule short breaks during the workday to refocus and recharge.
    • Engage in physical activity, like a quick walk or a workout, to boost endorphins.
  2. Foster Connections:
    • Be courteous, kind and professional while communicating and interacting with colleagues, students and stakeholders.
    • Build relationships with colleagues by participating in team activities or informal gatherings.
    • Share experiences and challenges in a supportive environment to create a sense of belonging.
  3. Set Boundaries:
    • Establish clear boundaries to attain work/life balance and prevent burnout.
    • Communicate availability to colleagues and students to manage expectations effectively.
  4. Access Resources:
    • Utilise mental health services, which often include Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) Services, counselling and workshops.
    • Attend training sessions on stress management and resilience building.
  5. Practice Mindfulness:
    • Incorporate mindfulness techniques, such as meditation or deep-breathing exercises, into your daily routine to reduce stress and improve focus.

Strategies for University Students

  1. Engage in Campus Activities:
    • Join clubs, organisations or study groups to connect with peers and foster friendships.
    • Participate in extracurricular activities that interest you to balance academics with fun.
  2. Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle:
    • Prioritise a balanced diet, regular exercise and sufficient to support mental well-being.
    • Avoid excessive caffeine and alcohol, which can negatively affect mood and anxiety levels.
  3. Utilise Support Services:
    • Take advantage of Student Counselling Services and related workshops offered on campus.
    • Reach out to academic advisors or mentors for guidance and support.
  4. Practice Time Management:
    • Create a realistic schedule to manage coursework and deadlines, reducing feelings of exhaustion and anxiety.
    • Break tasks into smaller, manageable steps to maintain a sense of accomplishment.
  5. Stay Connected:
    • Keep in touch with family and friends, even if you are far from home.
    • Share your feelings and experiences with trusted individuals to alleviate stress and gain perspective.

On this World Mental Health Day 2024, let us all commit to enhancing mental health and well-being, in simple and effective ways throughout the University. By prioritising self-care, setting boundaries, managing time, fostering connections and utilising available resources, we can create a supportive environment that nurtures mental health and well-being. Together, we can make our University a place where mental health is valued and prioritised, thereby promoting a more welcoming, inclusive, vibrant and productive academic community.

If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health, remember that support is available. Reach out to campus Student Counselling Services, representatives of UTT’s EAP, participate in workshops and engage with your community. Together, we can support one another and cultivate a mentally healthy campus for all.
