The University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) has broken new ground in the pursuit and delivery of quality tertiary education. The Accreditation Council of Trinidad and Tobago (ACTT) recently held its Quality in Tertiary Education (QuITE) Awards where UTT was the only tertiary level institution to receive awards in all three (3) of the coveted categories.

The (QuITE) Awards are granted to institutions which demonstrate excellence in the implementation of their Quality Management System, Student Support Services and/or Institutional Research Capacity. UTT placed first and received the Award for Excellence in Institutional Research Capacity and ranked second and third respectively for the Award for Excellence for an Established Quality Management System and the Award for Student Support Services in Tertiary Education (SITE).

Senator the Honourable Fazal Karim, Minister of Science and Technology and Tertiary Education, delivered Remarks at the (QuITE) Awards and pointed out that, "in order to attain this hallmark of high quality in tertiary education and training, there is a need to benchmark the performance of higher education institutions against international standards". According to Minister Karim, "this will ensure that [we] continuously strive for excellence in terms of the scope and nature of the programmes offered, programme development and delivery and facilities and infrastructure". By so doing, this measure will enhance the international recognition of local institutions and the qualifications of graduates, as well as, attract new students to local Universities.

All Academic Maritime programmes at UTT have been accredited by the Professional Affairs and Education Committee (PAEC) of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) of the United Kingdom while several other programmes are accredited through the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and the Energy Institute (EI) of the United Kingdom.
