The Evolution and Forecasting of Satisfaction and Project Success in Construction

Construction projects are notorious for their low success rates and dissatisfied stakeholders. Project success (factors, criteria and attributes), and to some extent stakeholders being satisfied, have been researched with minimal practical beneficial outcomes to date. The largest research gaps are that a multivariate approach has not yet been considered; followed by a myopic view of the construct of satisfaction which even though other disciplines have considered since the 1930s, researchers in the current field have treated lightly. 

The main objectives are to (a) determine whether correlation and causation exist between project attributes, factors and criteria as compared to the project outcomes of Satisfaction and Project Success; (b) model a framework to calculate the probability of achieving Satisfaction and Project Success; and (c) present generalised scenario probability calculations per stakeholder and stage in the project life cycle in this framework for initial validation in selected Trinidad and Tobago projects. 

This research uses a pragmatic mixed method approach. The quantitative data collection includes project factors, criteria and attributes, while the qualitative element probes subjective proxy information to the satisfaction construct. Data collection is by questionnaires, acquiring secondary data and observations from a sample set obtained systematically through filtering by stratified quota, then random, purposive sampling techniques. Analyses to be used include descriptive statistics, correlation analyses, multiple regression analyses, neural network regression and ethnographic discussion of findings with respect to existing literature. 
 
The importance of this research can be presented in two broad areas (a) advancing the torch in this research area by presenting a multivariate approach and using a well-defined construct for satisfaction; and (b) professionals can use the probability calculator to see the real-time prediction on their trajectory to satisfying the client and contractor due to knowing where improvements are necessary. Upcoming stages of the project and potential judgements by the stakeholder will give an indication where additional efforts could be concentrated to help potentially improve satisfaction.

Mr. TARUN DOERGA has been an educator at UTT since January 2007 disseminating Civil Engineering knowledge in areas ranging from Geotechnical Engineering to Construction Materials and Project Management. Mr. Doerga obtained his degrees in Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) in 2004 at the University of Guyana and Master of Science in Construction Engineering and Management in 2010 at the University of the West Indies. 

Apart from his experience in the education sector, Mr. Doerga worked in industry in varying capacities, some of them ranging from Technician to Project and Branch Manager at a rice processing and exporting company in Guyana, as well as Private Consultancy in residential building design & construction. 
 
In addition to coordinating programmes in the department from 2008 to present, Mr. Doerga developed and delivered course material for numerous courses for the National Engineering Technician Diploma in Civil Engineering and Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering Systems.
