The Ministry of Energy and Energy Affairs (MEEA) has committed to the promotion of the use of Renewable Energy (RE) technologies nationwide as part of its strategic plan. The MEEA, through National Energy, is implementing several projects geared towards spreading awareness and educating the population on the benefits of RE. Some of the projects established thus far include SOLAR Induction Lighting at Community Centres and educating on Solar Skills in secondary schools. Cabinet has mandated the MEEA to establish and implement a SOLAR HOUSE in Trinidad and Tobago under the ambit of National Energy. The Company has since selected the UTT Pt. Lisas Energy Campus as the site of the Solar House.

National Energy has identified an RE consultant to provide the design of the building and to project manage its establishment. The design is a single-story; wooden construction of approximately 750 square feet with roof mounted solar panels. Environmental impacts are minimal as this is a prototype building for display purposes only.

Consequent to this, a contractor was selected to construct the Solar House based on the consultant’s design. The construction commenced on May 7th, 2015 and the Solar House is now well advanced. An MoU has been established between National Energy and UTT to govern the relationship between the two parties. The anticipated completion date for this important project is the end of June, 2015.
