UTT bests UWI in TSTT-powered debate

| Oil and gas weren't the only power sources generating heat on the opening day of the Trinidad and Tobago Petroleum Conference 2009, as dueling university students tackled a proposition on the nation's global competitiveness ranking. Team UTT's (University of Trinidad and Tobago) debating skills gave them the victory over Team UWI (University of the West Indies) at the event, as the action was streamed live over the South Chamber's and Blink Broadband's high speed network. |
| Brenton Davy, Randall Ballack and Patrice Joseph bested UWI's team of Nwoma Grant, Sherezz Grant and Sharane Simon, arguing against the statement: "Be it resolved that Trinidad and Tobago's decline in the global competitive index ranking should be an issue of concern." The judges scored it close - UTT 539, UWI 511 - but the winners won an overwhelming popular vote through the use of bmobile sms voting. UTT took over 80 per cent of the handset-delivered vote. |

| Winners and the runners-up took home prizes courtesy TSTT, the runners-up received wheeled duffel bags and gift sets, courtesy of bmobile, while the winners received BlackBerry and Nokia handsets. The debate, which took place at the Hyatt Regency Trinidad, was streamed at the Blink website (blinkbroadband.tt) and the website of conference hosts the South Trinidad Chamber of industry and Commerce. |
