The University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT), in collaboration with the Ministry of Tertiary Education and Skills Training, the Ministry of Culture and Community Development and the National Academy for the Performing Arts (NAPA), recently commemorated Emancipation Day with the presentation of UHURU: Celebrating Freedom.  The production honoured the enduring legacy of Emancipation while celebrating the significant contributions of African heritage to the social, cultural and artistic development of Trinidad and Tobago.

Derived from the Kiswahili word meaning "Freedom", UHURU featured a compelling programme of theatrical readings, dance and musical performances.  Through these artistic expressions, the production paid tribute to the courage resilience and achievements of those who fought for freedom while reflecting on the enduring impact of Emancipation in shaping the nation's identity. 
Speaking at the event, Professor Selwyn R. Cudjoe O.R.T.T., Executive Chairman and Chairman of the Board of Governors, UTT, explained that one of the University's fundamental responsibilities is to help shape national identity and foster pride in Trinidad and Tobago by integrating the arts and culture into education.

The event also reinforced the university's commitment to cultural education following the recent introduction of its compulsory History and Culture of Trinidad and Tobago course. In his remarks, Professor Rean Maharaj, Acting President, UTT, emphasised that "understanding our nation's history and cultural heritage is an essential part of becoming an educated citizen", highlighting the university's commitment to preparing graduates who are both professionally competent and culturally grounded.
