ESG President Speech

Good evening.

I stand before you today not just as the Executive Student Guild President of the University of Trinidad and Tobago, but as a proud representative of a student body alive with potential, purpose, and a burning desire for progress.

Tonight marks a moment of transition - one filled with gratitude, reflection, and a renewed commitment to leadership through service.

To the Outgoing Officers

To the outgoing chapter officers, I say this with deep sincerity: thank you.

Thank you for your time. Your sweat. Your sacrifices. Your relentless pursuit of student welfare. You stepped up when it was easier to stay quiet. You showed up when no one else would. You chose the hard road - the leadership road - when it would have been easier to just focus on your coursework and walk away.

The late nights, early mornings, lengthy meetings, the last-minute meetings, all the unexpected challenges and obstacles. These are just a few of what you would have had to overcome, during your time as an Officer.

Yet still you delivered.

Your tenure has not been ordinary - it has been impactful. You advocated for improvements to campus infrastructure, addressed urgent academic concerns, you have taken bold steps to bring back life to the University through events, and student activities.

Let's not gloss over what was accomplished:

  • APA made crucial steps in revitalisation of campus life with events and social gatherings.
  • Camden fostered connections that deepened student engagement and laid the groundwork for much more progress to be made.
  • Chaguaramas improved communication with the student population, improved campus life with various cultural and social events, build connection s with administration.
  • ECIAF brought back sports, launched “Cook and Share” initiatives, built bridges of communication with administration - even when those bridges needed to be built from scratch.
  • John D revived community spirit with simple but meaningful events that brought people together, and improved communication with administration, and set the foundation for much progress.
  • Tamana revitalised campus life through various events and have laid the groundwork for a functional recreation room, enhanced cultural diversity through the campus prayer room.

You have helped reshape the perception of what a Guild officer is - not a passive observer, but an active builder. You've brought voices into rooms that were once silent. You've planted seeds that will grow long after your tenure has ended.

Your impact didn't go unnoticed. It was felt, heard, and will be remembered.

From the Executive Guild and the entire student body: thank you for leading with integrity and serving with heart.

To the Incoming Officers

And now, to our newly inaugurated chapter guild officers: Welcome to the arena.

This isn't just a role. It's not just a resume booster. It's a mandate.

To serve. To speak up. To show up - even when you're tired, even when no one claps, even when it feels like nothing is changing.

You are now the voice and backbone of your campus. You are the bridge between what students need and what the administration hears. You are the heartbeat of your Guild chapter.

And here's the real truth:
Leadership is going to test you.

As Ms. Tavares reminded me recently: Leadership is not sexy. It's not all mic drops and photo ops. It's long meetings, unread emails, WhatsApp groups with 200 unread messages, and a calendar that never has enough space.

There will be times when:

  • Your team doesn't show up with the same energy.
  • You submit a proposal and wait weeks for a response that never comes.
  • Your fellow students don't believe in you.
  • You may have to juggle exams, personal responsibilities, and a crisis on campus - all at once.

You may feel frustrated, discouraged, even like you've failed.

But these moments are not signs to quit. They are signs to dig deeper. This is where leadership is forged.

It's not about waiting for perfect conditions - it's about showing up in spite of them.

So here's my advice:

  • Learn to communicate clearly, not just loudly.
  • Learn to support each other, especially when morale is low.
  • Learn to hold each other accountable, even when it's uncomfortable.

Lead with humility. The Guild isn't about titles - it's about impact. They say that power can only be held by those willing to bend a knee to pick it up. Don't let your new positions cloud your perception of who you are.

Lead with integrity - You will be watched, questioned, and critiqued. Let your actions speak louder than any caption or campaign.

Lead with purpose. You chose this - so remember why you started, especially when things get tough.

And above all - you are not alone.

Lean on your Executive Guild.
Lean on your fellow chapters.
Lean on the Student Development Unit.
Lean on each other.

Together, we will build stronger chapters.
We will revive student clubs and reignite campus culture.
We will ensure that in every meeting, every committee, and every decision - students are never an afterthought.

A Charge to All of Us

As we turn this page, I charge every officer - outgoing, incoming, and returning - to lead with integrity, to serve with heart, and to build with vision.

This is not a time for ego. It's a time for unity.

This is not a time for talk. It's a time for solutions.

This is not a time for titles. It's a time for action.

There will be storms - but we don't fear storms.
Because we, the Guild, are the ones who build lighthouses.

Closing

Let us honour those who came before us by building better for those who will come after us.

Let's move forward - chapter by chapter, campus by campus - into a future where no student feels unheard, unseen, or unsupported.

To the Outgoing Officers I say thank you for your service, and congratulations to the new Guild officers of 2025/2026.
Your time starts now - and I believe in you.

Thank you
