This past Labour Day weekend The University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) partnered with the Launch RockIt organisers to host the 6th edition of ‘Start-up Weekend’ which was held from Friday June 17th - Sunday June 19th, 2016. This 54-hour event is aligned with the entrepreneurial mandate of the University, as well as benchmarked to other Startup Weekend initiatives globally.
The collaboration between Launch RockIt and UTT saw students and alumni afforded the opportunity to present their innovative ideas and business concepts towards developing their business plans. Over the weekend, some 60+ entrepreneurs worked on developing their ideas and laying the groundwork for developing successful businesses.
Given the current need for successful start-ups supporting the national diversification agenda, and the limited job market, students were encouraged to make use of the initiatives presented during the Start-up Weekend so that they could better utlise entrepreneurial support programmes. The collaboration, therefore, focused on generating more creative initiatives which are organically linked with business incubation. Such activities seek to promote UTT as a key influencer in the area of entrepreneurship development, and also encourages students to benefit from an environment that continuously ignites their entrepreneurial spirit.
