Every two years, the Urban and Regional Information Systems Association (URISA) hosts a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Conference in the Caribbean. This meeting is the only event of its kind dedicated to sharing research and development amongst the Caribbean GIS community. URISA, a global non-profit organisation established in 1963, presented its first Caribbean GIS Conference in Jamaica in 2001. The University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT), M.Sc. student in Integrated Coastal and Ocean Management (ICOM), Ms. Priya Pollard was given the opportunity to present a paper at the 8th URISA Caribbean GIS Conference, which took place at the Hilton, Barbados from September 5th - 8th, 2016. Ms. Pollard under the guidance of her lecturer Mr. Deanesh Ramsewak, Senior Instructor (UTT Marine Sciences) along with input from Ms. Shelley Bradshaw from the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM), presented a paper entitled "A Review of GIS and Remote Sensing Methods for Sargassum sp. Mapping and Monitoring in the Caribbean". This paper which was well received at the Conference was a work in progress towards her final year M.Sc. Thesis. In 2017, Ms. Pollard successfully completed her studies in Marine Sciences at the UTT Chaguaramas Campus.
