As the national University, UTT rose to the challenge to contribute to national efforts against the effects of COVID-19 by manufacturing fabric face masks to wear in public settings. This forms part of the Government’s established protocols to curb the spread of the virus.

To date, the University has manufactured approximately 3,000 face masks which were distributed to staff and students of the University as well as other local entities. Of these, over 700 were donated to the North Central Regional Health Authority and the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA).

This initiative, which began in early April, was undertaken by final year students of the Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) in Fashion Design, alumni of the B.F.A. Programme and Instructors of UTT’s Caribbean Academy of Fashion and Design (CAFD). In their varying capacities, they have all taken an active stance in the fight against this pandemic by contributing their time and expertise to a worthy cause.

UTT is pleased to be a part of the nationwide, collective action of both Government and citizens alike, and also views this as a teachable moment of fostering innovation and civic responsibility among its students. Guided by one of its strategic themes, the University saw this as an opportunity to provide tangible solutions to some of society’s most immediate challenges.
