Science Exhibition Week Project inauguration ceremony

UTT’s Centre for Kinesiology, Physical Education and Sport (CKPES) held an inauguration ceremony to officially commence the Science Exhibition Week Project on Wednesday 23rd November 2022 at the Main Auditorium, UTT San Fernando Campus. 

Dr. Kerry Dollaway, Programme Leader of the CKPES, in his introductory speech gave encouraging words and lauded the initiative. The main address was given by Dr. Ashton Rogers, the pioneer and Project Leader of the Science Exhibition Week Project. Dr. Marlon Melville delivered a compendious presentation on the importance of understanding the fundamentals of research.  After the official ceremony, guests were invited to engage the students of the Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology degree abouttheir posters and project models.  

The vision of the Science Exhibition Week Project is to create an unmatched experience for Higher Education at UTT rooted in the fundamentals of deep learning. The overarching goal is to promote real-time declarative and non-declarative memory by bringing textbooks to life. The aims of the project are:

  1. to implement a pedagogical method with curriculum design elements that promote long-term memory by reinforcing eLearning with practical learning and unmatched experiences;
  2. to increase undergraduate enrollment by displaying the projects to the public, especially secondary school students; 
  3. to increase postgraduate enrollment by preparing undergraduate students to conduct research; 
  4. to increase research and publication by undergraduate students, the largest student body with the potential to make a significant contribution to the publication output of UTT; and 
  5. to be environmentally sustainable by using biofriendly materials minimise plastic waste. 

The Science Exhibition Week Project is focused on taking Bloom's taxonomy to its higher domains through lateral, vertical, social, experiential, and purposeful learning. To achieve this, the curriculum implemented projects as one of the main instructional and assessment tools. Other instructional tools include on demand eLearning content, quizzes and classroom discussions. Kinesiology year two – four students, were required to design projects based on their course content. The projects contained four assessed elements:  a scientific poster; a desktop model to demonstrate the theory; a report and an oral presentation. This curriculum design satisfies Higher Education learning theories related to Project Based Learning, Inquiry Based Learning; Problem Based Learning, Independent Learning and Applied Learning and Scientific Research Learning. The Science Exhibition Week Project also provided the opportunity for developing soft skills necessary for societal integration and employment such as critical thinking, oral presentation, communication, collecting and analysing data, networking, academic writing, social development, project management, confidence, and competitive ability. This curriculum design also aligns with Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and Gardner’s theory of Multiple Intelligences to meet the varying needs and intelligence of students.
