UTT- First National University for Trinidad and Tobago's
First Olympic Gold Medallist in Javelin- Keshorn Walcott



The University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) will proudly welcome Keshorn Walcott, the youngest ever Olympic javelin champion, to UTT for the upcoming 2012/2013 Academic Year. The Olympic gold medallist has accepted a Full Scholarship from UTT to pursue an Undergraduate programme; the plans for which were first mentioned by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago the Honourable Kamla Persad-Bissessar. Keshorn's Manager, Mr. Sean Roach, emphasised that, "… the plan for Keshorn to join UTT was not something that came after the gold medal; it was always part of the plan".

According to Minister of Tertiary Education and Skills Training, Senator the Honourable Fazal Karim, Keshorn's success, "Transcends the discipline of javelin and serves as a poignant reminder of what can be accomplished through hard work". Keshorn's UTT scholarship includes, among other things:

  • Books;
  • Room and Board;
  • Meals;
  • Equipment;
  • Laptop; and
  • Stipend

Minister Karim announced plans to re-name UTT's High-Performance programme in honour of the Olympic gold medallist and to seek lands for allocation of a UTT stadium which, according to the Minister, will be "Purpose-built, purpose-driven and dedicated to training nationals to achieve success in sport."

Chairman of UTT's Board of Governors, Mr. Curtis R. Manchoon, congratulated Keshorn on his achievement which he stated was as a result of, "strategy and personal goals".  Mr. Manchoon praised the scholarship arrangement and reiterated UTT's position as a University, "…of the people, for the people and by the people." Keshorn's desire to study and train at home, in Trinidad and Tobago, is indicative of the confidence that the Olympic gold medallist has in the quality academia and training that can be derived at UTT. UTT's Acting President and Provost, Dr. Fazal Ali, summed up the University's jubilation of having Keshorn on board, by coining three simple words for the University: Unlimited Talent and Technology.
