Teaching Artist Training is a course designed to introduce performing artists at The University of Trinidad and Tobago's (UTT's) Academy for the Performing Arts (APA) best practices in the field of teaching artistry and is on offer to all of the performing arts areas: dance, music, theatre and theatre design. Taught by Assistant Professor Caitlyn Kamminga, the course focuses on preparing students to instruct group classes and create residencies with a community partners. Students study international best practices for preparatory materials in arts and disabilities, as well as learning practical elements, such as songs and activities for use in the classroom. Within the course students are introduced to a local organisation, Consortium of Disabilities Organization (CODO), with whom we partner, to offer a mentored residency in the special schools of Trinidad and Tobago. Students receive credit, as well as a stipend for their service learning hours teaching in the special needs schools in Trinidad and coaching students in the lead up to Music Festival for Persons with Disabilities.

 

Since 2013 UTT has hosted Music Festival for Persons with Disabilities at a variety of its campuses. This combination of special education students and tertiary level performing arts students has produced an annual music festival that has given immeasurable empowerment and joy to all involved.
