The University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) in partnership with the British Council and the Royal College of Art has commenced the workshop series project “Serious Animation”.

This project adds another dimension to the possibilities of animation as an art form, aiming to use animation and technology to develop devices for medical purposes with a focus on children with Cancer and Down Syndrome.

The workshop series targets the audiences that the to-be-developed tablet app is intended to engage, including students of UTT’s ICT and Masters of Health Administration programmes.

The partnership with the British Council and the prestigious Royal College of Art, UK will also be extremely significant as UTT continues to build its network of organizations and individuals in the field.

The workshop series is facilitated by Ms. Joan Ashworth, Dr. Neus Abrines Jaume and Matt Abbiss. Joan Ashworth is an artist/filmmaker whose animated films have explored gothic fantasy, swimming, meadows, and the fertility of mermaids. Her films have been screened at international festivals and events winning a number of awards and commendations. Ashworth has a background in making commissioned titles, commercials and graphic identities for cinema and TV.

The workshop series takes place from August 18 to 20, 2015 and is being hosted at the Animation Lab of the UTT John S. Donaldson Port-of-SpainThe Creativity Campus.

1. WORKSHOP - DOWN SYNDROME

Looking at the communication aspects of the app and how it can be developed and improved.

2. WORKSHOP - PEDIATRIC CANCER

Exploring how animation/interactivity can be developed further for gathering feedback on treatments.

3. UTT ANIMATION STUDENTS

Looking at how animation can be used in an applied way to help elicit information from people who find it hard to express their feelings and thoughts.

UTT Receives Specialised ICT Accreditation

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), along with the Accreditation Council of Trinidad and Tobago (ACTT) have extended congratulations to The University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) on the milestone achievement of accrediting its Information and Communication Technology (ICT) programmes. UTT ICT graduates will be equipped with the firm competitive advantage needed to make them stand out in the global market, having certified proof of expertise gained from a centre of excellence.

Omar Lewis Profile:

Whether exhibiting animation in the Museum of Modern Art affiliate, PS1 Center for Contemporary art, illustrating for Marvel Comics, creating Crab Catcher (the Caribbean’s first studio produced video game), or teaching art for over twenty (20) years, Trinidad-born and New York city raised Omar Lewis has always put creativity, passion and love at forefront of all his endeavours. He has written and published three (3) books in his children’s book series, “The Wonderful World of Myat”. Omar was recently selected to participate in the Caribbean Tales Incubator Programme, through which he will be developing an animated series based on his books.
