The University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT), through its Caribbean Academy of Fashion & Design (CAFD), is proud to present the third edition of its annual Art & Design Exhibition, from May 17- 31, 2011, at the hotel lobby of the National Academy for the Performing Arts.

During this time, the work of students enrolled in the University’s fashion design programme will be on display. A sun-drenched backdrop of high vaulted ceilings, curved windows and marbled floors, is the perfect ambience to showcase the colourful textile prints and treatments on silks and cottons; fashion drawings, digital art and design concepts, garments cut from hand-dyed fabrics, fanciful handbags and fashion jewelry…all conceived and created by UTT’s students. Visitors will be treated to a study of masks; a showcase by first-year fashion students which underscores the rich cultural dialogue of these budding fashion experts. New to this year’s Exhibition, will be fashion drawings inspired by the art community and Sustainable Design - recycled items in both apparel and jewelry design.

This Exhibition showcases the brilliance of UTT’s young fashion talent. In the midst of full-scale panels with drawings; chicken-wired frames cloaked with garments and accessories perched on podiums, will be a large screen monitor alit with a CAFD slide show. These representations are sure to give a holistic view of the talent which abides within the fashion programme.

The interaction of top local fashion professionals with CAFD students, in the “Designer Critic Project”, is another new addition to this year’s Art & Design Exhibition. Meiling, Heather Jones, Peter Elias, Zadd & Eastman and Shaun Perez-Griffith, all participated in the project which involved sketch selection through to the execution of the finished garments. Each of these encounters was documented and later assembled into a slideshow presentation which will also be shown throughout the duration of the Exhibition. A fashion show the CAFD Designer Critic Show, will take place on May 19, 2011 in the presence of industry professionals, VIPs and the press, the video from the show will be available for viewing at the exhibition during the week of May 23-31, 2011.

The CAFD Art & Design Exhibition is scheduled to coincide with numerous other fashion-related activities planned for Trinidad and Tobago’s May-June “Fashion Season” including FWTT (Fashion Week in Trinidad and Tobago) and the San Fernando Fashion Weekend.
