In 2016, The University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) became the proud host institution of the Maritime Technology Cooperation Centre Caribbean (MTCC Caribbean). The MTCC Caribbean is one of five such centres (Caribbean, Latin America, Africa, Asia and Pacific) established worldwide under the Global MTCC Network (GMN) Project. The GMN Project is funded by the European Union (EU) and implemented by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
Located at UTT Chaguaramas Campus, the MTCC Caribbean has successfully executed a number of workshops and training seminars, through its extensive network of national and regional partnerships. In this regard, the MTCC Caribbean continues to promote the objectives of the GMN Project and the green shipping agenda in the region.
MTCC Caribbean recently completed its mid-term evaluation conducted by IMO Consultant Ms. Nana Gibradze. At the completion of the evaluation, Ms. Gibradze noted that "the [MTCC] Caribbean team is one of the strongest of the five MTCCs and is comprised of highly qualified personnel with diverse academic/research, managerial and industry backgrounds." This augurs well for UTT as the Technical Secretariat for the MTCC Caribbean is staffed exclusively with graduates of UTT's Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Nautical Science/Maritime Operations and Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Operational Maritime Management programmes.
Through the MTCC Caribbean, UTT will create the first baseline of energy efficient technology in shipping in the Caribbean. This is a major accomplishment as this sets the benchmark for continued research within the maritime industry. Furthermore, the MTCC Caribbean intends to move towards self-sustainability by expanding its research agenda and testing new technologies to promote positive climate action in the maritime sector.
As the national University, UTT continues to position itself as a leader in tertiary education, providing solutions to some of society's most pressing challenges through quality research and innovative thinking.
