The National Engineering Technician Diploma (NETD) programmes are designed to create well-rounded technicians with a strong educational foundation and industry-relevant skills and competencies. Graduates who meet the programme matriculation requirements may apply for admission into any of the UTT’s Engineering Bachelor degree programmes. The NETD in Petroleum Engineering produces Technicians capable of performing effectively in all areas of the upstream petroleum industry. Graduates develop the required skills through the practical application of key concepts and principles in petroleum engineering technology. Graduates who meet the matriculation requirements may apply for BASc Petroleum Engineering on a 2+2 route which allows completion of the BASc in an additional two years. This programme is internationally accredited by the Energy Institute (EI) of the United Kingdom and the Accreditation Council of Trinidad and Tobago (ACTT).

Entry Requirements:

• Passes in a minimum of five (5) subjects at CSEC (CXC O’Level) General Proficiency in Grades I or II and from 1998, Grade III or equivalent GCE O’Level including Grades A, B or C in Mathematics, English Language, Chemistry (excluding Electrical/Electronic, Instrumentation, Renewable Energy Engineering Technology and Mechanical Engineering); and OR 
• Completion of UTT’s Pre-University Programme (PUP) or Certificate in Applied Engineering programme with a minimum of 50% in ALL attempted subject areas; OR 
• Other equivalent qualifications may also be considered. 

Mature Student Entry: 

An applicant who does not satisfy all the stipulated minimum academic or technical qualifications for admission to the programme may be accepted as a Mature Student. He/she would need to possess the critical elements of the stipulated qualification and would be assessed by the UTT Programme Leader as possessing a combination of qualifications and educational or experiential maturity to enable him/her to successfully participate in the programme.

The world is undergoing an Energy Transition in which technological innovations is enabling increased utilisation of renewable energy as a means of avoiding carbon emissions which contribute to climate change. In addition, research and development across the globe is being undertaken to develop methods to reduce carbon emissions associated with oil and gas energy. As such, over the coming decades as energy developments continue to unfold, the Energy Systems Engineering Unit of the UTT anticipates that “Renewables are here to stay, but Oil and Gas are not going away”. 

The B.A.Sc. in Energy Engineering is designed to deliver the Energy Engineer best suited to adapt to the Energy Transition as described above. Graduates in Energy Engineering will have the unique capacity to pivot between the oil and gas and renewable energy industries. These graduates will be able to function as both Oil and Gas Energy Engineers and Renewable Energy Engineers and will be able to integrate the experience of traditional oil and gas companies as they transition to “Net Zero Carbon” in their operations. Furthermore, given the continually increases intensity of data driven processes, projects and decision making within the energy industry a core component of this programme is Data Science and Data Analytics. Overall the programme aims to produce graduates who can: 

• Produce students who are employable, and understand the fundamental principles of energy engineering so that they can successfully pursue careers as graduate engineers; 
• Develop the graduate’s ability to analyse open-ended problems and design solutions for Oil and Gas Energy Systems and in Renewable Energy Systems and related disciplines. This includes evaluation of associated uncertainties, risks, entrepreneurial opportunities and evaluation of societal impact; 
• Promote effective oral and written technical communication skills and team building skills; 
• Prepare graduates with engineering fundamentals to work effectively in industry

Entry Requirements:

Students can enter the B.A.Sc. in Energy Engineering from Year 1 or skip Year 1 and immediately enter Year 2 depending on their qualifications as specified below: 

Entry to Year 1 

Passes in a minimum of five O’ Level subjects inclusive of: Mathematics, English Language, Physics & Chemistry (CSEC General Proficiency with Grade: I, II or III using the Six-Point Grading Scheme or equivalent) 

Entry to Year 2 (Skip Year 1) 

• Passes in A’ Level Mathematics and either Chemistry or Physics together with Communication Studies and Caribbean Studies (CAPE Unit 1 & Unit 2 or equivalent) plus O-level Physics and Chemistry. 
• Or 2 Year Engineering Diploma (NETD or equivalent with a minimum GPA of 2.7) 
• Or Mature Student Entry - An applicant who does not satisfy all the stipulated minimum academic or technical qualifications for admission to the B.A.Sc. Energy Engineering Programme may be accepted as a mature student. The Master of Engineering (MEng) degree is an advanced undergraduate programme requiring four (4) years of full-time or six (6) years part-time study requiring thirty-six (36) credits per year. Students in the MEng programme have the option to exit and with a Bachelor of Applied Science (BASc) degree after earning 108 credits. The BASc award meets the partial requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng). The first year of study is common to all engineering programme options and is offered at the Point Lisas campus only. The MEng in Petroleum Engineering programme is internationally accredited by the Energy Institute (EI) of the United Kingdom. 

The Master of Engineering (MEng) degree is a full honours engineering programme that prepares students for careers as professional engineers, locally and internationally. During the second and third years of the MEng a holistic blend of courses are offered in the following categories:

After completing the third year of study, student who choose to exit the programme and graduate with the Bachelors of Applied Science (BASc) will have to subsequently reapply to complete the fourth year and obtain the MEng qualification. For such students, GATE funding will no longer be available. 

During the fourth year of study, students may choose to specialize in Oil and Gas or Renewable Energy.

The programme consists of a combination of coursework, taught courses and project theses, with a focus on students using their initiative under direction and supervision to acquire the necessary knowledge to address upstream engineering problems. Entry Requirements:

• A pass in CAPE I and II and or A-level subjects: Mathematics and either Chemistry or Physics, a pass in CAPE Communication Studies and Caribbean Studies and or Cambridge General Paper plus O-level/CSEC Physics and Chemistry. 
• Graduates from a 2-year Engineering Diploma Programme with a minimum GPA of 3.0 will be considered, resulting in a requirement of about three additional years of study to earn the BASc. degree after the engineering Diploma. The Diploma Programme does not cover the detail work required for the BASc. Programme. 
• Graduates from a 2-year Petroleum Engineering Diploma Programme with a minimum GPA of 3.0 will be qualified for the 2x2 (Two by Two) track or pathway into the second year of the MEng degree. Such students can exit the programme with the BASc after two years of study or complete the MEng in three (3) years of study. 
• Other previous tertiary level qualifications will be considered, and any additional academic upgrading courses required to enter the programme will be identified. 

Mature Student Entry to the BASc in Petroleum Engineering: 

An applicant who does not satisfy all the stipulated minimum academic or technical qualifications for admission to the programme may be accepted as a Mature Student. He/she would need to possess the critical elements of the stipulated qualification and would be assessed as possessing a combination of qualifications and educational or experiential maturity to enable him/her to successfully participate in the programme.

The Master of Science in Energy Engineering with Specialisation in Renewable Energy is designed for students with an Engineering or equivalent degree in Petroleum Geoscience or Natural Science. The aim of the programme is to produce graduates with a specialty in Energy Engineering, who would be immediately useful in the upstream petroleum sector, the downstream process industries, the emerging renewable energy industries and elsewhere in the energy value chain. This specialty would be engineering based for the major renewable energy options and in addition, include Sustainable Energy Policy formulation, supplemented by key skills related to Data Science. 

The objective of the programme is to produce graduates who can: 

• Function effectively in the changing energy times. 
• Adapt to the constant changes required to meet the energy demands of Trinidad and Tobago and the wider Caribbean. 
• Analyze open-ended problems and design solutions for Energy Systems Engineering and related disciplines. This includes evaluation of associated uncertainties and risks and evaluation of societal impact. 
• Acquire relevant skills in management, oral and written communication, team building, project management, economics, risk evaluation and decision-making required by the energy industry.

• A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Petroleum Geoscience or Natural Science with a minimum GPA 2.50 on a 4.0 scale.
• A combination of undergraduate education and equivalent experience will also be considered.

The Master of Philosophy is awarded on completion of a thesis, based on innovative work, demonstrating evidence of mastery in the application of advanced techniques in the solution of a research problem, and the successful completion of a minimum of four (4) mandatory research courses and a minimum of four (4) seminars. There must be an oral defence of the Thesis. 

Taught courses are offered online. Meetings relating to supervisor directed courses are held using communication applications such as Zoom or MS Teams. Special arrangements may be made for laboratory and personal interaction, should the need arise, in keeping with existing health protocols.

Entry Requirements:

• Persons holding a Taught Master’s Degree from an approved university with a B average or equivalent GPA. 
• Persons holding a Bachelor’s degree from an approved university with a B+ average, or Upper Second-Class Honors or equivalent GPA. 
• Persons with other professional qualifications and industrial or business experience deemed to be suitable by the Board of Postgraduate Studies and Research.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees are awarded on the basis of a Dissertation based on original research, together with successful completion of a minimum of four (4) mandatory research courses and four (4) seminars. The written Dissertation report must provide documentation of a significant original contribution to the body of knowledge in the area of study and an oral defence of the Dissertation.
