Description

U-STEP is UTT’s SPECIAL TERTIARY EDUCATION PATHWAY, designed for secondary school students who may not have the minimum five CSEC passes to continue their studies. U-STEP has been designed to give persons an alternative pathway into tertiary education. The dynamic portfolio of courses offered through U-STEP enables students to pursue and successfully enter a UTT programme. Students will be required to complete only the course(s) necessary to satisfy entry into their chosen programme.

The courses offered are divided into four categories:

Foundations: English A and Mathematics
Science: Chemistry and Physics
Technical: Mechanical Workshop, Electrical Workshop, Engineering Drawing
Pre-professional: Criminology, Sports Science and Academic Writing

How do I use U-STEP to access my chosen UTT programme?

The programme to which you apply may refer your application to the U-STEP programme. You will be guided to take the courses needed to satisfy your entry requirements.

What programmes are available after completing U-STEP?

Students can enter any of UTT’s Certificate, National Engineering Technician Diploma (NETD) and specific Bachelor programmes after successfully completing U-STEP.

Are U-STEP courses GATE approved/funded?

U-STEP has been designed to allowstudentsto take and pay only forthe courses needed for entry into their chosen programme. GATE funding is therefore saved for their future undergraduate programme.

Cost of the U-STEP Pathway

The cost of each U-STEP course is TT $1800.00. Successful completion of relevant U-STEP courses are required to gain entry into a UTT programme. The pathway is not GATE funded.

Description

The Certificate in Applied Engineering (CAE) programme is designed for persons who are interested in qualifying for entry into the UTT engineering diploma programmes. It is intended to provide secondary school students who do not have a full CSEC (CXC O'Level) or GCE O'Levels certificate, persons who hold a full craft or pre-technician certificate and mature students, an entry route to embark upon a career in engineering. CAE is also a terminal qualification, for those who do not wish to continue for the Diploma.

Students wanting to further their educational pursuits within the MME Unit and meet the matriculation requirements, can apply to the NETD in Mechanical Engineering programme.

Entry Requirements:

CSEC (CXC) General Proficiency level in Grades I or II and from 1998, Grade III or GCE O’Levels including Grades A, B or C or equivalent in Mathematics, English Language and a Science subject (Physics or Chemistry or Integrated Science) or Technical Drawing or Additional Mathematics or Industrial Technology.
Persons possessing Full Craft/Pre-Technician certificates such as the National Examination Council (NEC) and the Trinidad and Tobago National Vocational Qualification (TTNVQ) with Mathematics, English Language and a Science subject (Physics or Chemistry) or Technical Drawing or Industrial Technology.
Other suitable combination of qualifications and/or experience will be considered.

Mature Entry:

An applicant who does not satisfy all the stipulated minimum academic or technical qualifications for admission to a programme, based on years of experience and the ability to handle the level of programme learning, may be accepted as a mature student. Description

This programme was designed for persons wanting to pursue careers in the food and beverage industry. Graduates will have the ability to engage in entrepreneurial activities or enter the industry being “work-ready”, highly motivated and have the knowledge base and skills relevant to the industry. New and existing employees of the food and beverage industry can acquire the technical and practical knowledge and skills for food processing, food safety and good manufacturing practices at the entry level. The programme aims to contribute to the achievement of food security and food safety in Trinidad and Tobago by focusing on the use and processing of local produce for value-added products, strengthening food and beverage organizations and their human capacity.

Entry Requirements:

Passes in a minimum of five (5) subjects at CSEC (CXC O’ Level) General Proficiency in Grades I or II and from 1998, Grade III or equivalent GCE O’ Levels including Grades A, B or C inclusive of Mathematics, English Language and/ a Science Subject and/OR;
Students who do not meet the university admission requirements above may be admitted through review/special criteria. Requirements for admission under this provision include passes in two (2) to four (4) subjects at CSEC (CXC O’ Level) and/or any other qualifications deemed suitable such as CVQs, NEC and Technical Vocational certification or other evidence of potential for success. Students permitted under this criterion will receive “Provisional Acceptance with Academic Deficiencies”, resulting in a placement into “introductory courses”. After successfully completing the required “introductory courses”, the student can then receive “Full Acceptance” to enrol into the Certificate in Food Technology.

Mature Student Entry:

An applicant who does not satisfy all the stipulated minimum academic or technical qualifications for admission to the programme based on years of experience and the ability to handle the level of programme learning may be accepted as a Mature Student. He/she would need to possess the critical elements of the stipulated qualification and would be assessed by the UTT Programme Leader as possessing a combination of qualifications and educational or experiential maturity to enable him/her to successfully participate in the programme.

The concept of training in Process Operations encompasses the safe, sustainable and efficient operation of mass production systems that change or transform raw materials into useful, higher valued products. All plant and industries have need for Process Plant Operators not just to man each piece of equipment in the processing line but to make decisions on adjustments to process flows and other operating conditions like pressure, temperature and liquid levels in vessels.

The University of Trinidad and Tobago through the Department of Biosciences, Agriculture and Food Technologies (BAFT) / Eastern Caribbean Institute of Agriculture and Forestry (ECIAF) Campus offers a residential programme providing training in Animal Health Management, Animal Production and Veterinary Public Health. Cabinet Minute STTE (2006) 45 is an approval by Cabinet whereby current and future ECIAF’s programmes are mandated to produce “young people with a practical technological tertiary level education”. Graduates of this programme are ‘work ready individuals’ who are rapidly employed in the monitoring of animal health in the ruminant and poultry sector.

Although the Diploma in AHPVPH has been in existence for many years, this revised version brings in a new philosophy of training that seeks to embody the entrepreneurial dimension and focuses on training in the three core areas. As uncontrollable external forces continue to threaten the national food supply, the programme is well positioned to contribute to the achievement of food security in Trinidad and Tobago by filling the void in human capital within the agricultural sector.

Description

This programme was designed for persons interested in pursuing an applied and career-oriented qualification to enable them to successfully engage in entrepreneurial activities or enter the job market. With its strong practical components integrated into most theoretical elements and its internship (work-based learning) programme, students gain real-world experiences leading to “work-ready” and highly skilled graduates. This programme aims to promote Trinidad and Tobago’s diversification thrust by building and strengthening core competencies in the food processing and manufacturing industry at the technician level to service the food and beverage sector which employs over 11,000 persons. Its focus will position or improve the level of innovation in the industry, diagnostic, food analysis and food safety capability and maintain high-quality standards while linking primary production to secondary processing in the creation of value-added products.

Programme Aims and Objectives

The aims of the Diploma in Maritime Operations - Engineering programme are to provide candidates:

pursuing the Certificate of Competency relevant to 3rd Engineer Officer of the Watch (EOOW) in the merchant navy with the required qualifications; education and training to be awarded the United Kingdom Maritime and Coast Guard Agency (MCA) certificate ‘STCW KNOWLEDGE UNDERSTANDING AND PROFICIENCY’, hence preparing them to become Engineer Cadets/3rd Officers in the Merchant Navy.
with a university-based education forming the basis of study for progression to degree level studies; in particular, the BSc. Nautical Science/Maritime Operations offered by the university
with a university-based education in level two Mechanical and Electrical Engineering forming the basis of study for progression to engineering degree level studies offered by the UTT.

Programme Learning Outcomes

On completion of the Diploma in Maritime Operations - Engineering programme, candidates will be able to:

Knowledge and Understanding

recall principles of science and engineering knowledge related to the marine engineering discipline.
recall maritime laws and regulations with regards to ensuring the safety of the seafarer and protection of the marine environment.
identify the functions and operations of shipboard engineering equipment and machinery; marine propulsion, power and auxiliary systems present aboard vessels of the Merchant Navy.
define the responsibilities of an Engineer 3rd Officer of the Merchant Navy as outlined in the STCW convention.

Medical fitness and eyesight requirements (for candidates wishing to pursue a career at sea)
All candidates for and holders of STCW Certificates of Competency must hold a valid medical fitness certificate. The standards of medical fitness are currently available in MCA Marine Safety Notice MSN 1856 (M+ F) (available at www.mcga.gov.uk)
The medical fitness certificate should be an ENGI certificate that is issued in accordance with the requirements of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (UK) and will be retained by the seafarer.

Admissions with Advanced Standing for OOW Applicants

There are no opportunities for students with advanced standing with respect to this programme;

Mature Student Entry:

Mature students with appropriate industrial experience are to be particularly encouraged to apply for admission to the programme. It is envisaged that many mature students will already have sea going experience and support level qualifications and will be keen to obtain an internally recognized certificate of competence at the operational level. Mature students not in possession of the prerequisite qualifications may be accepted to the programme at the discretion of the Programme Leader.

For safety of life at sea and the protection of the marine environment, it is essential that seafarers have a level of competence that enables them to carry out their duties safely and effectively. Accordingly, it is a requirement of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) that merchant vessels are operated by seafarers who hold Certificate of Competency (CoC) which attest to their competence at the level or rank for which they are employed. The current requirements are detailed in the IMO ‘Standard of Training, Certification and Watch keeping, 1978, as amended (Manila Amendments) (2010)’, commonly referred to as STCW Code.

This programme is approve by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) UK and successful completion of this programme and the subsequent Professional Officer of the Watch (Deck) programme will permit students to sit the Professional Officer of the Watch Navigation written and oral examination conducted by the MCA.

The NETD in Renewable Energy Engineering Technology (REET) diploma programme is the first practical technician level programme focused on Renewable Energy in CARICOM.

The programme is designed to produce practical, industry ready and globally competitive Renewable Energy Engineering Technicians who will directly contribute towards the sustainable development and use of the indigenous renewable sources of energy in Trinidad and Tobago, and CARICOM. It makes use of state-of-the-art equipment and technology; industry-based software; and local, regional and international standards and best practice to develop the technical competencies of learners in the programme.

The interdisciplinary nature of the programme and the many project and team-based assessments inculcates and develops the emotional intelligence of students in the programme.

The Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in the Performing Arts is a full-time four-year programme of multidisciplinary study for those aspiring to a career in the Performing Arts or in Arts Education. The aspiring artist will have the opportunity to experience a range of courses in Acting, Dance, Technical Theatre Design and Music. Building on a foundation of common and core courses in performance, culture and entrepreneurship, students engage in courses from across the programme to create an educational and artistic pathway that incorporates a combination of studio exploration, practical rehearsal projects and staged theatrical presentations.

Students are introduced to a range acting theories and techniques in Theatre History, Script Analysis and Play Directing. In addition they will also experience a diversity of dance styles including Classical Ballet, Classical Indian, Modern and Contemporary forms, while placing emphasis on Caribbean Folk Dance and a Caribbean aesthetic. Furthermore, students get the opportunity to explore wide-ranging techniques which develop strong body-awareness, vocal skills and imagination.

At The University of Trinidad and Tobago we offer a Bachelor of Science in Nautical Science/Maritime Operations programme, designed to build the commercial maritime acumen of its graduates. This programme was the first Maritime Bachelor's degree offered within Trinidad and Tobago and is the only accredited undergraduate maritime business degree offered in the region to date. The programme answers to the recommendations of several studies on the requirements for the development of the maritime sector. The Vision 2030 National Development Strategy 2016-2030 has identified that quality infrastructure and transportation are key facilitators for improving productivity. Maritime Services has been identified as one of seven key national economic areas being targeted for expansion and achieving global competitiveness. Vision 2030 further states that continued efforts will be placed on improving the quality of port services, increasing private investment in the maritime sector, and integrating port operations. It is expected that suitably qualified graduates working within the maritime sector will fuel and enhance the growth of this industry through their entrepreneurship.

The programme is targeted at persons wishing to undertake a career in the shore-based maritime industry. Maritime education is a relatively new concept in the tertiary education landscape of the region. While various forms and levels of training have existed in little pockets within the region, prior to this degree there was no undergraduate programme tailored to building the knowledge and skills for shore-based maritime administration.
Fundamental aims of this programme are to:

develop "industry-ready" graduates with demonstrated competencies in addressing issues and problems likely to arise in the maritime field
fulfil the existing demand for trained professionals in the local maritime industry
build the human resource capacity within the industry to fuel, through its graduates, the long term growth of this sector.

The BASc/MEng Process Engineering programme is internationally accredited by the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) of the United Kingdom. The BASc award meets the partial requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng). The first year of study is common to all engineering programme options and is offered at the Point Lisas campus only. After completing the third year of study, students can choose to exit the programme and graduate with a Bachelor in Applied Science (BASc) degree with 108 credits but will have to subsequently re-apply to complete the fourth year and obtain the MEng qualification. For such students, GATE funding will no longer be available.

The Master of Engineering (MEng) degree is an advanced undergraduate programme requiring four (4) years of full-time or eight (8) years of part-time study requiring thirty-six (36) credits per year. The M.Eng. programme prepares students for careers as professional engineers, locally and internationally. This programme of study is broader and deeper than the corresponding B.A.Sc. degree, with an increased emphasis on preparation for professional practice. The world is undergoing an Energy Transition in which technological innovations is enabling increased utilisation of renewable energy as a means of avoiding carbon emissions which contribute to climate change. In addition, research and development across the globe is being undertaken to develop methods to reduce carbon emissions associated with oil and gas energy. As such, over the coming decades as energy developments continue to unfold, the Energy Systems Engineering Unit of the UTT anticipates that “Renewables are here to stay, but Oil and Gas are not going away”.

The B.A.Sc. in Energy Engineering is designed to deliver the Energy Engineer best suited to adapt to the Energy Transition as described above. Graduates in Energy Engineering will have the unique capacity to pivot between the oil and gas and renewable energy industries. These graduates will be able to function as both Oil and Gas Energy Engineers and Renewable Energy Engineers and will be able to integrate the experience of traditional oil and gas companies as they transition to “Net Zero Carbon” in their operations. Utilities Engineering is a well-established and full-fledged engineering discipline worldwide. The programme also assist the seafarers in making the transition from ship to shore and the non-seafarers to understand the problems associated with the sea-going sector of the industry.

The M.Sc. Programme in Operational Maritime Management is aimed at providing an academic qualification that is suitable and relevant to management positions in the shore-based maritime industry infrastructure. The mix of faculty experience together with the programme content and peer participation will blend together to give all the students a complete knowledge and understanding of the industry. On successful completion of the programme, graduate will be able to:

apply contemporary relevant international maritime standards in the maritime industry
demonstrate safety management in the Maritime Industry
apply risk management techniques within the specialized context of maritime operations
apply knowledge of international trade, international legal compliance and principles of marine environmental protection with specific reference to the Caribbean region
evaluate the factors which influence port and maritime economics and how these apply to different trades and the various sectors of the maritime industry
rationalise ethical decisions in the maritime domain in the practice of business and entrepreneurship.

Entry Requirements:

A person holding a relevant first-degree OR
An Officer in the Merchant Navy who holds a STCW Management Level COC, OR
An Officer in the Merchant Navy who holds an STCW Operational Level COC with 5 years of experience at this level OR
A person with a minimum of ten (10) years middle management experience in a maritime-related company.
Mature students not in possession of the prerequisite qualifications may be accepted into the programme at the discretion of the Programme Leader of the Maritime Programmes

Entry Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree from an approved university with a B+ average or Upper Second Class honours or an equivalent GPA.
Bachelor’s degree with a lower than B+ average but with compensating experience and/or qualifications (Academic Regulations, Policy and Procedures for Post Graduate Programmes; September 2009).

Note: The Bachelor’s degree should be in the areas of:

Computer Engineering, or
Computer Science, or
Information Technology, or
an approved science or technical field, or
Management, law, business or other social science.

Mature Student Entry
An applicant who does not satisfy all the stipulated minimum academic or technical qualifications for admission to a programme may be accepted as a Mature Student. He/she would need to possess the critical elements of the stipulated qualification and would be assessed by the UTT Programme Head as possessing a combination of qualifications and educational or experiential maturity to enable him/her to successfully participate in the programme.
