The University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) recently hosted the prize giving ceremony for the Renewable Rivalry National Competition, held in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries, Ministry of Education and National Energy.
This competition formed a cornerstone of the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Education (REEE) Project, a national initiative led by UTT’s Outreach and Industry Relations Unit. This project aimed to cultivate early interest in sustainable energy solutions among primary and secondary school students. It also promoted STEM education and environmental consciousness among our nation’s youth. Over two hundred (200) students participated in this inaugural competition, tackling age-specific challenges under the themes Windy Wonders and Solar Horizons.
Speaking at the event was Senator Professor the Honourable Prakash Persad, Minister of Tertiary Education and Skills Training, who praised the University for its innovative approach and effective use of local materials in the project. He also encouraged UTT to continue exploring opportunities that will further enhance development and sustainability.
Professor Rean Maharaj - Assistant Vice President, Research, Academic and Student Affairs (Ag), emphasised the importance of strategic partnerships, noting that the initiative demonstrates the strength of collective collaboration. He acknowledged the project’s success in uniting key national stakeholders to design and implement a cohesive and impactful programme.
Also in attendance was the Honourable Ernesto Kesar, Minister in the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries, who congratulated the University on its commitment and dedication to the REEE Project. He also made mentioned of entrepreneurial opportunities for Trinidad and Tobago in transitioning from hydrocarbons to renewable and sustainable energy, while enhancing the diversity of our country’s energy value chain.
UTT is committed to the sustainable and entrepreneurial development of society through the advancement and application of research. The University commends the Outreach and Industry Relations Unit on a successful prize giving ceremony, and looks forward to supporting many more impactful initiatives.
