The University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) honoured the academic and literary achievements of its Executive Chairman, Professor Selwyn R. Cudjoe, O.R.T.T., by dedicating a library corner and display in his name, at UTT Tamana Campus.

Throughout his life, Professor Cudjoe has made an outstanding contribution to academia, with a focus on challenging the colonial approach to education, while amplifying Afro-Caribbean approaches and intellect. Through his teachings and numerous publications, Professor Cudjoe has enriched the pan-African educational landscape, while creating a more inclusive narrative for academic consideration. His distinguished career which spans over five decades, has brought him a number of accolades, most notably, the Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, for his contribution to National Service and Education.

This dedicated library space will display fifteen of Professor Cudjoe's publications, along with artefacts and scholarly work from his storied career, to audiences, with the intention of inspiring a generation of scholars, educators and leaders.

Delivering remarks at the launch event, Professor Rean Maharaj, Acting President, UTT, commended Professor Cudjoe for championing the cause of reminding us that history, culture, and identity are not peripheral to education, but central to nation-building.

In his feature address, Professor Cudjoe reflected on the importance of preserving intellectual literary heritage and cultural legacy for future generations, stating that “We are a people. A people do not throw their geniuses away. It is our duty as artists and as witnesses for the future to collect them again for the sake of our children.”

The University extends congratulations to Professor Cudjoe on his achievements and life-long devotion of education, and offers best wishes as he continues to contribute to the academic landscape of Trinidad and Tobago.
