On April 30 2026, The Academy for the Performing Arts (APA) came alive with expression and creativity, as students and staff gathered to celebrate International Jazz Day, in a concert that showcased both musical talent and a deep appreciation for jazz music's role in bringing together people from all facets of life. The evening was a vibrant blend of energetic performances, soulful melodies, and impressive improvisation that kept the audience engaged from beginning to end.

The concert opened with a lively instrumental piece performed by the APA Jazz Ensemble led by Assistant Professor Anthony Woodroffe, immediately setting the tone for the night. The young musicians demonstrated remarkable skill and confidence, especially during the improvised solo, which are a defining feature of jazz music - each performance highlighted the dedication and hard work of the students.

The student ensemble made way during the second half of the event for a special guest, UTT's Master Artist in Residence, David Boothman and his Caribbean Renaissance (CR) Jazz Ensemble. Boothman's compositions featured a fusion of Caribbean rhythms and contemporary jazz, creating a unique sound, which reflected his deep understanding of the Caribbean aesthetic. The CR Jazz Ensemble has seasoned industry musicians, as well as recent graduates of UTT. For this event, Boothman invited three (3) current APA students to join the performance. A wonderful expression of mentorship on display for the audience.

The atmosphere throughout the evening was light and fun. Overall, the APA's International Jazz Day concert left the audience entertained and inspired. Another strong entry in the 2026 APAFest season.
