Research Led, Student Focused, Impact Driven

The Institute of Criminology and Public Safety has a highly qualified, dynamic and friendly staff group, committed to research, teaching and community outreach activities. ICPS is both research led and student focused. Our goal is to highlight the role and value of criminology in society, politics and public policy.

We conduct world class research that contributes to the development and implementation of criminal justice and public safety policy and practice in Trinidad and Tobago, as well as internationally. Our research is theoretically informed and practically relevant; designed to enhance the effectiveness of the criminal justice system and to promote public safety.

The research agenda of the ICPS aims to assist in the development of a national criminal justice and security architecture as well as impact regional and international trends in criminology, criminal justice and public safety. Our academic staff are well published in Criminology and the related Social Sciences of Sociology and Psychology.

The teaching staff of the ICPS comprises individuals from diverse academic interests and backgrounds, with a wide range of professional experience. Through innovative and dynamic techniques, teaching staff transfer skills, knowledge and experience to students providing a holistic learning environment.

Our teaching is student centered, thereby allowing students the opportunity to be active participants in their own learning. Our programme is not only geared towards student engagement in deep criminological thought but also in the provision of skills that will enable employability upon completion.

At ICPS we offer three teaching programmes: a Certificate in Security and Public Safety, a Diploma in Security in Public Safety and a Bachelors Degree in Criminology and Public Safety. Our teaching is student driven and outcome focused. We aim to equip students with appropriate criminological knowledge and a range of personal skills suited to a broad range of careers in criminal justice and beyond. As experienced Ph.D. supervisors, we also warmly welcome enquiries from individuals interested in pursuing doctoral research.

All programmes are delivered via the blended learning approach and consists either of face-to-face and compact classes, as well as online via the Canvas platform. Students are required to attend classes on campus once per week. All assessments are either in the formative or summative mode. ICPS is committed to the development of student’s self-directed learning skills which are necessary for the establishment of effective life-long learning.
