The Certificate in Security and Public Safety programme offers a wide range of practical content and skills, industry-driven and with a judicious mixture of theory, practice and field experience to help build performance levels and professionalize the industry. The programme also seeks to provide some standardization and appropriate certification in the private security industry.

Entry Requirements:

• Passes in a minimum of five (5) subjects at CSEC (CXC O'Level) General Proficiency in Grades I or II and from 1998, Grade III or equivalent GCE O'Levels including Grades A, B or C in Mathematics and English Language.
• Combination of other relevant academic qualification/work experience may also be considered.

Mature Student Entry:

An applicant who does not satisfy all the stipulated minimum academic or technical qualifications for admission to a programme may be accepted as a Mature Student. He/she would need to possess the critical elements of the stipulated qualifications and would be assessed/interviewed by the UTT Programme Head as possessing a combination of qualifications and educational or experiential maturity to enable him/her to successfully participate in the programme. This may include passing a pre-entry internal examination.

The Diploma in Security and Public Safety programme builds on the Certificate in Security and Public Safety programme by providing advanced and specialized practical and tactical knowledge in supervising and managing security and public safety affairs as well as designing and implementing appropriate interventions. It provides an opportunity for persons to be trained before they enter the security industry while accommodating those who are already on the job. Additionally, it seeks to provide some standardization and appropriate certification in the private security industry.

The Bachelor of Applied Science in Criminology and Public Safety aims to deal with the expansive, complex and specialised nature of crime and criminality.  As communities expand, as the industrial sector grows, and as public concerns over safety become more intense, there is a need to improve the relevant skills in the security industry and in law enforcement. The main focus of a traditional Criminology programme is the scientific study of the nature, extent, causes, and control of criminal behavior in the individual and in society. However, this programme is distinct as it offers a wide range of practical content and skills that are industry-driven. The Public Safety component of the B.A.Sc. offers a mixture of theory and practice, which deals with the prevention of and protection fromevents that could endanger the safety of the general public - quite important issues affecting Trinidad and Tobago and the wider Caribbean today.

Entry Requirements:

• Applicants must possess 5 CSEC (CXC O'Level) General Proficiency in Grades I or II and from 1998, Grade III or equivalent GCE O'Levels including Grades A, B or C in Mathematics and English Language;

OR

• Diploma in Security and Public Safety, UTT;

OR

• Combination of other equivalent academic qualifications / work experience may also be considered;

OR

• Qualified workers from professions such as teaching, law, probation, police, prisons, fire, judiciary and business will be considered;

OR

Advanced Standing

Students with advanced standing will be awarded appropriate exemptions and transfer of credits, as determined by an appointed committee or Programme Head. This would be awarded to those students who satisfied all requirements for the Diploma in Security and Public Safety, with a minimum CGPA of 2.5, as they would have completed all of the first year requirements for the B.A.Sc.;

The Master of Philosophy is awarded on completion of a thesis, based on innovative work, demonstrating evidence of mastery in the application of advanced techniques in the solution of a research problem, and the successful completion of a minimum of four (4) mandatory research courses and a minimum of four (4) seminars. There must be an oral defence of the Thesis. 

Taught courses are offered online. Meetings relating to supervisor directed courses are held using communication applications such as Zoom or MS Teams. Special arrangements may be made for laboratory and personal interaction, should the need arise, in keeping with existing health protocols.

• Persons holding a Taught Master’s Degree from an approved university with a B average or equivalent GPA. 
• Persons holding a Bachelor’s degree from an approved university with a B+ average, or Upper Second-Class Honors or equivalent GPA. 
• Persons with other professional qualifications and industrial or business experience deemed to be suitable by the Board of Postgraduate Studies and Research.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees are awarded on the basis of a Dissertation based on original research, together with successful completion of a minimum of four (4) mandatory research courses and four (4) seminars. The written Dissertation report must provide documentation of a significant original contribution to the body of knowledge in the area of study and an oral defence of the Dissertation.
