The Diploma in Coastal and Ocean Sciences programme is a two-year Full-Time or three-year Part-Time programme requiring a minimum of 68 credits for graduation which include an Internship (Internal and Industry) worth 5 credits. The Diploma in Coastal and Ocean Sciences programme is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to pursue a career in marine science and the management of coastal and marine resources. The Diploma in Coastal and Ocean Sciences programme reflects the University’s vision of innovation, entrepreneurship and commitment through research and development. The programme emphasizes the connection between the marine environment and sustainable marine resource management in ensuring a stable economy with an emphasis on healthy ecosystems, sustainable tourism, and food security. Students of the Diploma in Coastal and Ocean Sciences programme can develop the knowledge and expertise to prepare for new and exciting career paths in marine science as well as in the practical approach to managing marine and coastal resources. Entry Requirements

Passes in at least five (5) CSEC subjects General Proficiency (Grades I, II and from 1998 Grade III) or passes at GCE Ordinary Levels, which must include Mathematics, English Language, and any two of the following: Geography, Integrated Science, Human and Social Biology, Chemistry, Biology, Physics.
OR
Completion of a Certificate in Food Technology
OR
Completion of the Certificate in Applied Engineering (CAE).
Mature Student Entry
An applicant who does not satisfy the entire stipulated minimum academic or technical qualifications for admission to a programme based on years of experience and the ability to handle the level of learning, may be accepted as a Mature Student. He/she would need to possess the critical elements of the stipulated qualification and would be assessed by the Programme Teaching and Learning Committee as possessing a combination of qualifications and educational or experiential maturity to enable him/her to successfully participate in the Programme (e.g., paraprofessionals).

All applicants should have general computer skills and a familiarity with the Windows platform. Experience with MS Excel (or equivalent) and/or databases will be an asset.

It is recommended that students are able to swim and snorkel by the start of Year 2.
