Dr. Amalia Hosein is an Assistant Professor with the Marine and Biomedical Sciences Programme at The University of Trinidad and Tobago. She has a B.Sc. in Biology, an M.Phil in Microbiology and a PhD in Biomedical Engineering. Her current research interests are molecular epidemiology of diseases and their populations, as it relates to environmental factors; information technology and communication (ICT) applications for improved efficiency and efficacy in the public health system and the development of risk models for disease outcome prediction.

I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT). I started my career in Biomedical Engineering as a tutor and demonstrator in biochemistry and genetics whilst being involved in postgraduate studies. Following my MPhil, I became a research assistant on the UTT Telemedicine project and the UTT cardiovascular wellness project at the UTT where we researched the feasibility of telemedicine systems among patients undergoing sudden cardiovascular events. After my stint as a research assistant, I became an Instructor in Biomedical Engineering where I am involved in a range of teaching as well as supervising undergraduate students in areas of design of cardiovascular tools for pediatric patients as well as informatics involved in genomic research. The courses I contributed to in terms of teaching were cell biology, genetics, information technology, bioinformatics, the fundamentals of biomedical engineering and laboratory skills in biomedical engineering.

Genetic markers associated with chronic and non-chronic diseases in the multi-ethnic Caribbean population; Genomic bioinformatics as it relates to environmental (or other) contributors; Telemedicine applications for improved efficiency and efficacy in the health system; Design and development of neonatal and pediatric devices for improved outcomes.

Currently seeking PhD and MPhil students to undertake further epidemiological studies into the genetic relationship associated with diseases for the Caribbean population.
