Professor Rean Maharaj is an accomplished academic, researcher, and consultant with over 30 years of experience in science, engineering, sustainability, and innovation. He currently serves as Professor of Process Engineering and Acting President of the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT), where he combines technical expertise with strategic leadership to advance the institution’s research agenda and strengthen its contribution to national development.

He began his career as an application chemist before serving as a forensic analyst and appointed expert under Trinidad and Tobago’s Dangerous Drugs Act, where he provided critical testimony in both the Magistrates’ and High Courts. This foundation in applied science has shaped his career-long commitment to rigorous, impactful research.

A nationally recognized expert in sustainability and innovation, Professor Maharaj holds a Doctorate in Process and Utilities Engineering. His expertise spans renewable energy, climate change adaptation, carbon management, and circular economy solutions, with a proven record of advancing applied initiatives in Trinidad and Tobago and the wider Caribbean. He has successfully led multidisciplinary projects with government, academia, and industry, including national greenhouse gas inventories, renewable energy system simulations, carbon capture and storage assessments, and waste-to-resource programmes. His work is closely aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, Trinidad and Tobago’s Vision 2030, and global climate action priorities.

Professor Maharaj is also deeply committed to academic leadership and mentorship, having guided numerous MSc, MPhil, and PhD students. Beyond academia, he plays an active role in national service, contributing to standards development with the Trinidad and Tobago Bureau of Standards, advising ministries on climate change policy and technology needs assessments, and serving on the Board of Management at CARIRI.

A recognized thought leader in the Caribbean, Professor Maharaj continues to integrate scientific rigor with policy relevance, driving innovative pathways for decarbonization, resource efficiency, and sustainable development in emerging economies.
