As a former student-athlete at The University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT), Stefan Dillon, widely known as ‘Star’ in the sporting community, channelled his way through the ranks of a bona fide player to become one of the most promising coaches in Trinidad and Tobago. Playing at the Point Guard position throughout his career, Stefan was awarded an athletic scholarship to UTT in 2009 to be a part of the University’s High Performance (HP) Basketball team.

Prior to his enrolment in the HP Basketball programme, Stefan trained under American basketball player, the late Phil Henderson, for three (3) years. Henderson was a high school McDonald's All-American and best known for his collegiate career at Duke University from 1986 to 1990.

In 2012, Stefan successfully graduated from UTT, Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Sport Studies with specialisations in Sport Management and Sport for Development. In that same year, he earned Basketball Coaching Level 1 certification from the National Basketball Federation of Trinidad and Tobago (NBFTT).

Stefan began his coaching career at the secondary school level with Tunapuna Secondary School (TSS) and coached its various representative teams in the Trinidad and Tobago Schools’ Basketball Association (TTSBA) – East Zone competitions. Under his guidance, TSS was crowned the TTSBA East Zone Champion in 2017 (Under-15 Division) and 2019 (Under-17 and Under-20 Divisions), while making multiple final appearances.

For over a decade, the shining ‘Star’ has received training and coaching mentorship from former national basketball coach, local sporting icon and First Citizens Sports Foundation Hall of Famer, Mr. Joseph ‘Lenny’ Guy. In 2016, he accompanied the T&T Under-19 Men’s National Team as an Assistant Coach that participated and went undefeated in the Caribbean Hoopfest tournament in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

Stefan currently holds an Executive Masters in Sport Management which he earned at UTT in 2017, and received top academic honours with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.88. Stefan is also recognised as an International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Level 1 Coach.

In 2018, Stefan designed and solely conducted a national development initiative dubbed the “UTT National Basketball Outreach & Developmental Programme”. The programme sought to improve the level of the sport of basketball at secondary schools, while cultivating a standard and national structure for youth basketball training and development. Between 2018 and 2019, the initiative was able to engage a total of seven (7) schools and 122 students across Trinidad.

Stefan was selected as the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Basketball Coaches Association of Trinidad and Tobago (BCATT) in 2018. The following year, he was elected to serve as the Vice-President of Marketing and Communications of the NBFTT.

Through special invitation, ‘Star’ got the opportunity to attend the New York Knicks training camp in Tarrytown, New York in 2019. There, he was able to interact and connect with then Knicks President, Steve Mills; General Manager, Scott Perry; Head Coach, David Fizdale; Assistant Coaches, Keith Smart and Kaleb Canales; Assistant General Manager, Gerald Madkins; Special Assistant to the General Manager and two time NBA All-Star, Allan Houston; Trainer, Roger Hinds, and Knicks legend and Basketball Hall of Famer, Bernard King. Stefan also got to observe NBA stars such as Dennis Smith Jr., Julius Randle, R.J Barrett and the entire Knicks roster’s training methods at the camp.

Additionally, Stefan assists in part-time lecturing at UTT’s Centre for Kinesiology, Physical Education and Sport (CKPES), when requested. In his active playing career, he played at the local club level in the first and second divisions with teams such as T&T Elite, Maloney Pacers, Pistons, Trail Blazers, Royal Extra Lions and Brian Chase Academy.
