This programme was designed for persons wanting to pursue careers in the food and beverage industry. Graduates will have the ability to engage in entrepreneurial activities or enter the industry being “work-ready”, highly motivated and have the knowledge base and skills relevant to the industry. New and existing employees of the food and beverage industry can acquire the technical and practical knowledge and skills for food processing, food safety and good manufacturing practices at the entry level. The programme aims to contribute to the achievement of food security and food safety in Trinidad and Tobago by focusing on the use and processing of local produce for value-added products, strengthening food and beverage organizations and their human capacity.

Entry Requirements:

• Passes in a minimum of five (5) subjects at CSEC (CXC O’ Level) General Proficiency in Grades I or II and from 1998, Grade III or equivalent GCE O’ Levels including Grades A, B or C inclusive of Mathematics, English Language and/ a Science Subject and/OR; 
• Students who do not meet the university admission requirements above may be admitted through review/special criteria. Requirements for admission under this provision include passes in two (2) to four (4) subjects at CSEC (CXC O’ Level) and/or any other qualifications deemed suitable such as CVQs, NEC and Technical Vocational certification or other evidence of potential for success. Students permitted under this criterion will receive “Provisional Acceptance with Academic Deficiencies”, resulting in a placement into “introductory courses”. After successfully completing the required “introductory courses”, the student can then receive “Full Acceptance” to enrol into the Certificate in Food Technology. 

Mature Student Entry: 

An applicant who does not satisfy all the stipulated minimum academic or technical qualifications for admission to the programme based on years of experience and the ability to handle the level of programme learning may be accepted as a Mature Student. He/she would need to possess the critical elements of the stipulated qualification and would be assessed by the UTT Programme Leader as possessing a combination of qualifications and educational or experiential maturity to enable him/her to successfully participate in the programme.

• Graduates of this revised Certificate in Food Technology programme can matriculate into the Diploma in Food Technology programme

The University of Trinidad and Tobago through the Department of Biosciences, Agriculture and Food Technologies (BAFT) / Eastern Caribbean Institute of Agriculture and Forestry (ECIAF) Campus offers a residential programme providing training in Animal Health Management, Animal Production and Veterinary Public Health. Cabinet Minute STTE (2006) 45 is an approval by Cabinet whereby current and future ECIAF’s programmes are mandated to produce “young people with a practical technological tertiary level education”. Graduates of this programme are ‘work ready individuals’ who are rapidly employed in the monitoring of animal health in the ruminant and poultry sector. 

Although the Diploma in AHPVPH has been in existence for many years, this revised version brings in a new philosophy of training that seeks to embody the entrepreneurial dimension and focuses on training in the three core areas. As uncontrollable external forces continue to threaten the national food supply, the programme is well positioned to contribute to the achievement of food security in Trinidad and Tobago by filling the void in human capital within the agricultural sector.

This programme was designed for persons interested in pursuing an applied and career-oriented qualification to enable them to successfully engage in entrepreneurial activities or enter the job market. With its strong practical components integrated into most theoretical elements and its internship (work-based learning) programme, students gain real-world experiences leading to “work-ready” and highly skilled graduates. This programme aims to promote Trinidad and Tobago’s diversification thrust by building and strengthening core competencies in the food processing and manufacturing industry at the technician level to service the food and beverage sector which employs over 11,000 persons. Its focus will position or improve the level of innovation in the industry, diagnostic, food analysis and food safety capability and maintain high-quality standards while linking primary production to secondary processing in the creation of value-added products.

The Diploma in Forestry is designed to provide training in the management and conservation of forests, parks, wildlife and the environment at the technical and mid-management positions. Graduates will be equipped to protect the forest from man and natural destruction by applying appropriate protection methods and enforcing forestry rules and regulations; assist in research activities and engage in entrepreneurial activities.

• Passes in at least five (5) subjects at CXC (CSEC) General Proficiency (Grades I or II and from 1998, Grade III) or GCE O’ Levels. These must include Mathematics and English Language; OR 
• UTT Certificate in Food Technology OR 
• Completion of UTT’s Pre-University Programme (PUP) with ≥ 50% in all attempted subject areas; 
• Equivalent Qualifications will also be considered. Applicants will be assessed as possessing the equivalent qualification for entry into the programme. 

Mature Entry: 

“An applicant who does not satisfy all the stipulated minimum academic or technical qualifications for admission to a programme may be accepted as a Mature Student. The Diploma in NRM programme reflects the University's vision of innovation, entrepreneurship and commitment through research and development and is designed to be cost effective and efficient by strategically incorporating common courses across options/specialisations. The study of NRM will prepare graduates to contribute to resource protection, reduction in global warming and associated climate change adaptation and sustainable use of resources. The University of Trinidad and Tobago’s academic unit, Biosciences, Agriculture and Food Technologies (BAFT) is proposing to offer a new Bachelor of Science in Agriculture and Entrepreneurshipprogramme with specialisations in four areas, namely:

The Master of Philosophy is awarded on completion of a thesis, based on innovative work, demonstrating evidence of mastery in the application of advanced techniques in the solution of a research problem, and the successful completion of a minimum of four (4) mandatory research courses and a minimum of four (4) seminars. There must be an oral defence of the Thesis. 

Taught courses are offered online. Meetings relating to supervisor directed courses are held using communication applications such as Zoom or MS Teams. Special arrangements may be made for laboratory and personal interaction, should the need arise, in keeping with existing health protocols.
