The University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) continues to offer the Certificate in Process Operations (CPO) programme to meet the present and Future demand for Process Operators in the industrial and manufacturing sector. The concept of training in Process Operations encompasses the safe, sustainable and efficient operation of mass production systems that change or transform raw materials into useful, higher valued products. All plant and industries have need for Process Plant Operators not just to man each piece of equipment in the processing line but to make decisions on adjustments to process flows and other operating conditions like pressure, temperature and liquid levels in vessels.

Entry Requirements:

• Passes in at least five (5) subjects at CSEC (CXC O’Level) General Proficiency (Grades I or II and from 1998 Grade III) or GCE ‘O’ Levels inclusive of Mathematics and English Language (A science subject such as Chemistry or Physics will be an asset); OR 
• Completion of any of UTT’s preparatory or bridging programmes such as the Certificate in Applied Engineering (CAE), Pre-University Programme (PUP), Pre-Engineering Programme or Transition programme with ≥50% in ALL attempted subject areas; OR USTEP 
• Other equivalent qualifications as UTT may consider appropriate. 

Mature Student Entry: 

An applicant who does not satisfy all the stipulated minimum academic or technical qualifications for admission to a programme, based on years of experience and the ability to handle the level of programme learning, may be accepted as a mature student. The applicant would need to possess the critical mathematical and communication skills and would be assessed by the Programme Leader and/or a Process Engineering Review Panel.

The National Engineering Technician Diploma (NETD) programmes are designed to create well-rounded technicians with a strong educational foundation and industry-relevant skills and competencies. Graduates who meet the programme matriculation requirements may apply for admission into any of the UTT’s Engineering Bachelor degree programmes. The NETD in Chemical Engineering is a well-established engineering discipline worldwide and designed to meet the present and future demand for Chemical Engineering Technicians and highly trained Operators. Chemical and Process Engineering is about the transformation of raw materials into useful products. Trinidad and Tobago’s manufacturing industry has need for a stronger knowledge base in chemical and process engineering at the technician and operator level as well as to meet the industry need for more ‘hands-on’ graduate chemical or process engineers. This is particularly important as inherent industrial and manufacturing processes, technologies and their associated instrumentation and control and quality systems are constantly modernising. The NETD in Chemical Engineering is internationally accredited by the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) of the United Kingdom.

• Passes in a minimum of five (5) subjects at CSEC (CXC O’Level) General Proficiency in Grades I or II and from 1998, Grade III or equivalent GCE O’Level including Grades A, B or C in Mathematics, English Language, Physics and Chemistry (excluding Electrical/Electronic, Instrumentation, Renewable Energy Engineering Technology and Mechanical Engineering); and OR 
• Completion of any of UTT’s preparatory or bridging programmes such as the Certificate in Applied Engineering (CAE), Pre-University Programme (PUP), Pre-Engineering Programme or Transition programme with ≥50% in ALL attempted subject areas or completion of the Certificate in Process Operation (CPO); OR U-STEP 
• Other equivalent qualifications may also be considered. 

Mature Student Entry:

He/she would need to possess the critical elements of the stipulated qualification and would be assessed by the UTT Programme Leader as possessing a combination of qualifications and educational or experiential maturity to enable him/her to successfully participate in the programme.

The BASc/MEng Process Engineering programme is internationally accredited by the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) of the United Kingdom. The BASc award meets the partial requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng). The first year of study is common to all engineering programme options and is offered at the Point Lisas campus only. After completing the third year of study, students can choose to exit the programme and graduate with a Bachelor in Applied Science (BASc) degree with 108 credits but will have to subsequently re-apply to complete the fourth year and obtain the MEng qualification. For such students, GATE funding will no longer be available. 

The Master of Engineering (MEng) degree is an advanced undergraduate programme requiring four (4) years of full-time or eight (8) years of part-time study requiring thirty-six (36) credits per year. The M.Eng. programme prepares students for careers as professional engineers, locally and internationally. This programme of study is broader and deeper than the corresponding B.A.Sc. degree, with an increased emphasis on preparation for professional practice. M.Eng. graduates are equipped to solve problems in new technologies and develop new analytical techniques; successfully deliver innovative engineering products and services and account for project and finance management while keeping in mind technical and socio-economic constraints. In summary, the M.Eng. programme of study prepares students for leading roles in technical and/or managerial activities. Graduates from our accredited M.Eng. programmes can apply for registration as a Chartered Engineer as they demonstrate that the required knowledge and understanding has been met through formal education. The programme consists of a combination of coursework, taught courses and project theses, with a focus on students using their initiative under direction and supervision to acquire the necessary knowledge to address upstream engineering problems. The instructional pedagogy uses Project Based Learning and Team Study.

• Mathematics and Chemistry: Grade III or higher in CAPE Units I and II or grade C or higher in GCE A-level. 
• Graduates with a NETD/NEC Diploma in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Petroleum Engineering with a minimum GPA of 2.3. 
• Other relevant tertiary level qualifications will be considered.

Entry Requirements:

• • A UTT BASc. in Process Engineering normally with a minimum GPA of 2.30 is required for continuation into the 4th year MEng in Process Engineering
  • Graduates with the BASc in Process Engineering, or with an equivalent Process Engineering degree which is accredited by IChemE to the B standard, normally with a minimum GPA of 2.30, can apply for the MEng in Process Engineering up to five (5) years after graduation.
  • There shall be no Mature Student Entry to the MEng in Process Engineering.

Total Programme Credits for the Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) in Process Engineering: 144 (an additional 36 credits to the 108 in the BASc. in Process Engineering).

The Master of Philosophy is awarded on completion of a thesis, based on innovative work, demonstrating evidence of mastery in the application of advanced techniques in the solution of a research problem, and the successful completion of a minimum of four (4) mandatory research courses and a minimum of four (4) seminars. There must be an oral defence of the Thesis. 

Taught courses are offered online. Meetings relating to supervisor directed courses are held using communication applications such as Zoom or MS Teams. Special arrangements may be made for laboratory and personal interaction, should the need arise, in keeping with existing health protocols.

Entry Requirements:

• Persons holding a Taught Master’s Degree from an approved university with a B average or equivalent GPA. 
• Persons holding a Bachelor’s degree from an approved university with a B+ average, or Upper Second-Class Honors or equivalent GPA. 
• Persons with other professional qualifications and industrial or business experience deemed to be suitable by the Board of Postgraduate Studies and Research.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees are awarded on the basis of a Dissertation based on original research, together with successful completion of a minimum of four (4) mandatory research courses and two (2) seminars. The written Dissertation report must provide documentation of a significant original contribution to the body of knowledge in the area of study and an oral defence of the Dissertation.
