Process: Facilities - Separations Lab

The objective of this facility is to provide the students with hands-on training in various separation technologies and, through visual observations, develop proper understanding of the various mechanisms controlling the efficiency of separation. This lab is equipped with well instrumented units for investigating the performance of:

  • Distillation column
  • Packed column absorption (both random and structured packing)
  • Dew Point Tester,
  • Reverse Osmosis,
  • Filtration,
  • Three Phase Separator,

The single-cell annex also has several separation units that can be used for training purposes:

  • Centrifugal separation,
  • Ultra-filtration,
  • Spray dryer

Arrangements are presently underway to acquire/build experimental facilities for:

  • Pressure/temperature swing adsorption,
  • Membrane gas separation units.

This lab is being equipped with several simulation experiments aimed at developing greater awareness of the impact that various design/operations strategies have on the capital and operating costs of separation processes.
