The Process Dynamics facility is equipped with 4 copies of the TDC Operator training software. They are used to train students on how several processing units (such as Fluid Flow through pipes and vessels, Flash Distillation, Single and Multi-stage Compressors, Centrifugal and Reciprocating Pumps) respond to variations in operating conditions and/or different control schemes.
Process Engineering students also receive training in the Instrumentation and Control lab, which is operated jointly with the Utilities Engineering programme. Students receive hands on training in the following:
-
Fundamentals of process control, process dynamic characteristics, process control strategies e.g. feedback, feed-forward control, ratio control and split range control systems.
-
PID control of common process variables (flow rate, level, temperature, pressure and pH)
-
Single and multiple loop Process Control Trainers
-
Model based control systems (Delta V workstations)
A 32 user site license of the SIMTRONICS's DSS 100 Dynamic Simulator is presently used for training students in a real time environment. This software has the capability to simulate start-up, shut-and upset conditions of common processes. Distillation units can be simulated and the results compared with experimentally-determined results obtained in a control room environment.
