Introduction
Environmental engineering utilises the sciences and engineering principles to recover the natural environment (air, water, and/or land resources-Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6,7,13 &15), to provide potable water, clean air, and productive land for mankind (house or home), all other entities, and to remediate polluted sites.
Environmental engineering is defined as environmental monitoring, enhancement, and protection of the environment through applicable engineering interventions.
Biosystems Engineering includes engineering science and design with applications to biological, environmental and agricultural sciences.
Aims/Objectives
To address environmental problem through the providing of appropriate and best practice and state-of –the art solutions (knowledge, planning, design, construction, monitoring and evaluation):
- Land degradation problems such as soil erosion, sedimentation, and salinization.
- Water degradation problems such as water pollution (fresh and marine), acid-rain; run-off from industries and agricultural practices.
- Other areas include but not limited to, pharmaceutical waste monitoring; water/wastewater treatment; hazardous waste remediation.
- Air quality degradation problems such as air and noise pollution; in-door and out-door monitoring and investigations into sick-building syndrome; and Climate change problems through mitigation and adaptation.
- Environmental Impact Assessment, measuring and monitoring of environmental parameters.
- Environmental consulting - Industrial waste reduction; compliance regulations (Environmental Management Authority).
- Service to society (including NGOs, CBOs, schools); and UTT;
-
Use of waste products-recycle and sources of energy for biosystems opportunities exists in:
- Biomass energy;
- Solar energy;
- Wind energy; and
- Fuels energy.
-
Entrepreneurship – Assistance to environmental monitoring start-up companies:
- Advice on areas of testing;
- Analytical equipment evaluation;
- Laboratory designs;
- Assistance to company seeking CEC, Permitting requirement from EMA; and
- Laboratory accreditation (UNE-EN-ISO/IEC 17025:2017).
