The University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) is proud to announce the formalisation of three Memoranda of Understanding with the University of the West Indies (UWI). These agreements across different academic areas highlight the efforts by both institutions to uphold their commitment to the advancement and application of research, and also, the creation of strategic partnerships in academia.
At the signing ceremony for the most recent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between UTT's Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing and Entrepreneurship Unit and UWI's Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, Senator Professor Emeritus the Honorable Prakash Persad, Minister of Tertiary Education and Skills Training emphasised the need for both universities to work together for the benefit of the country, citing strategic partnerships between the Imperial College of Tropical Agriculture and the Eastern Caribbean Institute of Agriculture and Forestry; former iterations of UWI and UTT, respectively.
This view was shared by Professor Selwyn R. Cudjoe, O.R.T.T., Executive Chairman, UTT, who, in his remarks at the ceremony, stated ‘both institutions possess significant expertise that can be leveraged for greater national good.' Professor Cudjoe also called for integrated, responsive and impactful collaboration which would in turn support industry and shape the nation's future.
The signing of this MoU and two additional agreements between i) UTT's Energy Systems Engineering Unit and UWI's Department of Chemical Engineering, and ii) UTT's Biosciences, Agriculture and Food Technology programmes and UWI's School of Veterinary Medicine will serve to bridge the knowledge gap between both academic institutions and society at large. By
extension, these collaborative efforts in areas critical to the development of Trinidad and Tobago will provide support at a researcher level, with the intention of impacting national and regional policy.
Through the shared commitment to research, UTT is pleased to partner with UWI and fulfil its responsibility to its students, and the nation. Initiatives such as these assist UTT in not only contributing to the sustainable development of society, but also in achieving its vision of being the premier university dedicated to the socioeconomic transformation of Trinidad and Tobago.
