The Marine Sciences Unit is pleased to announce that Seth Matthew Aqui, a dedicated marine researcher and ocean protector from Tobago, and a current MPhil student in Marine Sciences at The University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT), has been selected as a National Geographic Young Explorer!
Seth, who completed his Bachelor of Science in Coastal and Ocean Management at UTT’s Marine Sciences Programme, is now pursuing his master's degree under the supervision of Dr Reia Guppy, Associate Professor at UTT’s Centre for Maritime and Ocean Studies. His work has consistently focused on promoting marine education and stewardship within his local communities.
Since 2019, Seth has been a passionate advocate for marine conservation. Through the National Geographic/The Nature Conservancy Marine & Community Conservation Remote Externship and Planet Reimagined Programs, he has been instrumental in implementing local conservation initiatives, including developing educational media and infrastructure for the Buccoo Reef. His efforts primarily involve working to create essential tools and raise awareness about the urgent need for sustainable marine resource management. In addition to his academic pursuits, Seth recently joined the Planning Unit of the Tobago Emergency Management Agency (TEMA). This role further broadens his expertise, with a clear goal of strengthening the resilience of marine communities across the Caribbean.
Seth's selection as a National Geographic Young Explorer is a testament to his unwavering commitment to marine science and conservation. We look forward to seeing the incredible impact he will continue to make in protecting our oceans.
